Two Neural Measures Differ between Urban and Rural Song Sparrows after Conspecific Song Playback

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2017
Urbanization is a critical form of environmental change that can affect the physiology and behavior of wild animals and, notably, birds. One behavioral difference between birds living in urban and rural habitats is that urban males show elevated boldness

Brain nonapeptide and gonadal steroid responses to deprivation of heterosexual contact in the black molly

open access: yesBiology Open, 2014
Fish may respond to different social situations with changes in both physiology and behaviour. A unique feature of fish is that social interactions between males and females strongly affect the sexual characteristics of individuals.

Sex pheromones in amphibians: a review

open access: yesVeterinární Medicína, 2005
Amphibians are interesting animals, very often kept by aquarists and vivarists. Their ability of intraspecific chemical signalization belongs to very interesting biological features.

Welfare Indicators for Aquaculture Research: Toolboxes for Five Farmed European Fish Species

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 18, Issue 1, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Refining approaches to measuring, monitoring and appraising animal welfare in aquaculture research is key to (i) protecting and optimizing it, (ii) documenting the severity of how and when it deviates, and (iii) ensuring good scientific quality, reliable results and reproducibility, amongst other factors.

Characterization and Distribution of an Arginine Vasotocin Receptor in Mouse

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Medical Science, 2006
A cDNA, which has a high homology with teleost Platichthys flesus [Arg8] vasotocin (AVT) receptor (GenBank: AK033957), was found in mouse genome database. Analyses of the deduced amino acid sequence revealed that a cDNA has several features of AVT receptor. We tentatively named it as a mouse vasotocin receptor (MVTR).

Beyond the Binary: Controlling Natural Sex‐Change in Hermaphroditic Fishes

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 17, Issue 4, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Sex‐change in hermaphroditic fishes is a complex but natural biological phenomenon that has significant implications for aquaculture fingerling production, selective breeding, and grow‐out. Understanding the physiological, endocrinological, and molecular pathways underlying hermaphroditism in fishes offers unique opportunities to manipulate ...

Chemical Interference: A Review on Endocrine Disruptors and Reproductive Communication in Amphibians

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 8, August 2025.
Amphibians are particularly susceptible to anthropogenic pollution. This paper reviews how endocrine‐disrupting compounds (EDCs) affect their mating behavior, noting significant research gaps in understanding these impacts. Further studies are crucial to grasp EDCs' effects on amphibian reproduction and population dynamics.

Time Course Changes in the Blood Parameters and the Expression of Diencephalic CRH and AVT mRNA Due to Acute Isolation Stress in Chicks

open access: yesThe Journal of Poultry Science, 2011
It is important to quantify and estimate stressful stimulation because stress appears to limit productivity and welfare in poultry. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of acute isolation stress (5, 10 or 30min) on the levels of blood ...

Sex differences in intestinal morphology and increase in diencephalic neuropeptide Y gene expression in female but not male Pekin ducks exposed to chronic heat stress

open access: yesJournal of Neuroendocrinology, Volume 37, Issue 6, June 2025.
Abstract The impact of heat stress (HS) on production is intricately linked with feed intake. We investigated the effects of HS on intestines and diencephalic genes in Pekin ducks. One hundred and sixty adult ducks were allocated to two treatment rooms.

How does oestradiol influence the AVT/IT system in female round gobies during different reproductive phases?

open access: yesBiology Open, 2017
In this in vitro gradient perfusion study, we determined whether there is a functional relationship between oestradiol and the arginine vasotocin/isotocin (AVT/IT) system in the female round goby (Neogobius melanostomus).
