Abstract We present a method to infer ocean diapycnal diffusivity based on high‐resolution ocean model predictions of the depth‐dependent viscous dissipation associated with internal wave shear. This method relies on recent advances in modeling and the parameterization of stratified turbulent mixing processes.

Abstract In the oligotrophic ocean, nutrient distribution plays a key role in controlling primary production via upward fluxes. In spring 2023, the BioSWOT‐Med cruise investigated how fine‐scale ocean dynamics influence nutrient availability in the Mediterranean Sea.

Evidence of Increased Deep Ocean Warming From a Sea Level Budget Approach
Assessments of the global mean sea level (GMSL) budget over the satellite altimetry era (since the early 1990s) have concluded that the GMSL budget is closed within data uncertainties until 2016. However, studies have shown that since then, the sea level

Linking Salinity and Precipitation Through Moisture Transport: A Study for the North Atlantic
Abstract Sea surface salinity (SSS) is a key indicator of the ocean–atmosphere freshwater balance and plays a central role in global moisture transport. This study investigates how extreme SSS anomalies in the North Atlantic (NATL) source region indicate atmospheric moisture pathways and precipitation in surrounding continental and island sink regions.

Machine Learned Equations for Vertical Mixing Coefficients in the Ocean Surface Boundary Layer
Abstract Neural networks offer novel ways to parameterize unresolved ocean mixing but are challenging to interpret. Here, we derive compact equations that reproduce the behavior of neural networks trained on a second‐moment closure data set. The resulting interpretable expressions employed in a physics‐based first order closure scheme match neural ...

Trajectories of >1,600 virtual Argo profiling floats and their sampled variability in key ocean physical and biogeochemical variables are simulated using a 0.125° global ocean physical-biogeochemical model (NOAA GFDL’s MOM6-SIS2-COBALTv2) and an ...

Abstract Mesoscale eddies play a key role in redistributing oceanic heat and salt, yet their global three‐dimensional (3D) transport structures remain poorly understood. Here, we estimate global meridional eddy heat and salt transports in the upper 1,800 m from satellite altimeter and Argo observations, revealing distinct vertical structures. Eddy heat

Within the Gulf of Mexico (GOM), measurements of ocean pH are limited across space and time. This has hindered our ability to robustly monitor and study regional carbon dynamics, inclusive of ocean acidification, over this biogeochemically variable sea ...

Thermal perturbation of the Sun [PDF]
Thermal perturbations of the solar convection zone can be modeled (to the first order) by perturbing the mixing length parameter alpha (equal to the ratio of the mixing length to the pressure scale height) used in the standard mixing length theory of ...
