HISTOLOGICAL STUDY OF GONADS IN TRIPLOID SCALLOPS, ARGOPECTEN PURPURATUS
Journal of Shellfish Research, 2005Abstract It is expected that in triploid organisms the energy normally used for reproduction would be allocated to growth. However, not all triploid molluscs are completely sterile, and in some cases even gametes are produced. The aim of this study is to assess the gonadal development in the native scallop Argopecten purpuratus induced to triploidy ...

A bacteriological study was carried out in a hatchery of Argopecten purpuratus located in northern Chile which had been affected by severe larval mortalities. The phenotypic characterization of the bacterial strains revealed that Vibrio alginolyticus was the predominant species isolated in the majority of samples taken from the different units of the ...

Bacteria in the culture of the scallop Argopecten purpuratus (Lamarck, 1819)
Aquaculture International, 2001The scallop Argopecten purpuratus is one of themajor resources of commercial importance in Chilean aquaculture. One of themajor limiting factors for the culture of this species has been mass mortalityoccurring during production of juvenile “seed” organisms where massmortality of veliger larvae has been attributed to the presence of pathogenicbacteria ...

Few studies have described the molecular response of mollusk larvae to heavy metal exposure. We investigated the response of Chilean scallop Argopecten purpuratus post-larvae to copper exposure under experimental conditions. Post-larvae were maintained with and without copper stress in tanks containing netlon collectors with biofilms that were formed ...

Physiological responses of the Chilean scallop Argopecten purpuratus to decreasing salinities
Aquaculture, 1998Argopecten purpuratus (Chilean scallop) is a filter-feeding bivalve which inhabits sheltered areas of the north and central Chile. Considering that culture of this species has started in the south of Chile, it is of great interest to know the tolerance of this bivalve to conditions of decreasing salinity, which can occur in these locations.
