An argument against global no miracles arguments

Synthese, 2018
Howson famously argues that the no-miracles argument, stating that the success of science indicates the approximate truth of scientific theories, is a base rate fallacy: it neglects the possibility of an overall low rate of true scientific theories. Recently a number of authors has suggested that the corresponding probabilistic reconstruction is unjust,

Probabilistic Argument Graphs for Argumentation Lotteries

2014
Uncertainty about which arguments or attacks should appear in an argument graph means that there is uncertainty as to the structure of the argument graph. When informal arguments are presented, there may be imprecision in the language used, and so the audience may be uncertain as to the structure of the argument graph as intended by the presenter of ...

Arguments and Proofs About Arguments and Proofs

2009
Both rhetoric and mathematics are ancient, elaborate and still active fields of study that cover a time span of more than two millennia. That much, they undisputedly have in common. However, in the domain of mathematics one will search in vain for traces, positive or negative, of rhetoric, and in the domain of rhetoric, although the relation between ...

Meta-level Argumentation with Argument Schemes

2013
Arguments in real-world decision making, for example in medical or engineering domains, are often based on patterns of informal argumentation, called argument schemes. In order to improve automated tool support of decision making in such domains, a formal model of argument schemes appears necessary.

Verification in Argument-Incomplete Argumentation Frameworks

Argumentation by Analogy in Stereotypical Argumentative Patterns

2014
As a consequence of the institutional preconditions applying to the strategic manoeuvring taking place in specific communicative activity types, certain context-dependent argumentative patterns of argument schemes and argumentation structures can be observed in argumentative discourse.

Argument Analysis: Components of Interpersonal Argumentation

2010
The aim of the paper is to propose a robust model of interpersonal argumentation (IP). The IP-arguments directly address participants of communication, i.e. they refer to speech acts rather than to propositional contents. Argumentation theory recognizes several IP-arguments, e.g. argument from position to know or ad hominem arguments.
