Uneven Impacts of Seawall Heightening on Tsunami Risk Reduction under Rising Sea Levels: Probabilistic Scenarios from the Japan Trench

open access: yesEarthquake Engineering &Structural Dynamics, Volume 55, Issue 11, Page 2948-2965, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Disasters exacerbated by climate change have prompted adaptation measures, including seawall heightening, which is an effective approach to protecting coastal areas. However, the combined effect of rising sea levels and tsunamis can create a compound coastal hazard, in which long‐term sea level rise amplifies the impact of tsunamis.

Maximum water stress is decoupled from climate, traits, and growth in a xeric oak

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 251, Issue 5, Page 2392-2406, September 2026.
We sampled sites across the geographic distribution of blue oak (Quercus douglasii) in California, USA, which spans a large range of mean annual precipitation. Summary Our ability to explain and predict the spatial patterns of forest mortality remains limited.

Root Order Dependent Changes in Fine‐Root Substrate and Soil Environment Regulate Soil Organic Nitrogen Fractions Under Acid Rain and Nitrogen Deposition

open access: yesLand Degradation &Development, Volume 37, Issue 14, Page 10464-10478, 30 August 2026.
ABSTRACT Acid rain and nitrogen deposition are important environmental stressors affecting soil nitrogen cycling in subtropical forests, whereas fine‐root decomposition represents a major pathway for soil organic nitrogen (SON) input and transformation.
