Artemisinin-A Gift from Traditional Chinese Medicine to the World (Nobel Lecture).
Angewandte Chemie, 2016Malaria has long been a devastating and life-threatening global epidemic disease in human history. Artemisinin, the active substance against malaria, was first isolated and tested in the 1970s in China.

Artemisinins: activities and actions
Microbes and Infection, 2004Multidrug-resistant malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum has severely limited treatment options over recent years. Artemisinins are still effective for treating uncomplicated as well as severe malaria, because resistance is not yet clinically apparent. This article reviews some clinically useful properties of artemisinins and how they might work.

Recent pharmacological advances in the repurposing of artemisinin drugs
Medicinal research reviews (Print), 2021Artemisinins are a family of sesquiterpene lactones originally derived from the sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua). Beyond their well‐characterized role as frontline antimalarial drugs, artemisinins have also received increased attention for other ...

Artemisinins and immune system
European Journal of Pharmacology, 2011Artemisinins in combination with other antimalarial drugs remain the mainstay of current antimalarial armamentarium. It is interesting to note that many traditional drugs with antiprotozoal background can wield immunomodulation on the recipient's immune system in a positive or negative direction. Artemisinins also attribute immunomodulatory distensions.

A Concise Synthesis of (+)-Artemisinin
Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2012Malaria represents one of the most medically and economically debilitating diseases present in the world today. Fortunately, there exists a highly effective treatment based on the natural product artemisinin. Despite the development of several synthetic approaches to the natural product, a streamlined synthesis that utilizes low-cost chemical inputs ...

Ferroptosis: a novel mechanism of artemisinin and its derivatives in cancer therapy.
Current Medicinal Chemistry, 2020BACKGROUND Artemisinin is a sesquiterpene lactone compound with a special peroxide bridge that is tightly linked to the cytotoxicity involved in fighting malaria and cancer. Artemisinin and its derivatives (ARTs) are considered to be potential anticancer

Artemisinins: Artemisinin, Dihydroartemisinin, Artemether and Artesunate
2011Artemisinin comes from the plant, Artemisia annua, an ancient Chinese herbal remedy for relapsing fever. Rediscovery of its antimalarial action in China in the 1970s has seen it and its semisynthetic derivatives become the most useful drugs for most malarial illness. Artemisinins have a sesquiterpene lactone structure.

AbstractHere, we describe an efficient and diversity‐oriented entry to both (−)‐artemisinin (1) and its natural antipode (+)‐artemisinin, starting from commercially and readily available S‐(+)‐ and R‐(−)‐citronellene, respectively. Subsequently, we answered the still open question regarding the specificity of artemisinins action.

Comparison of 9-hydroxy-artemisinin with artemisinin: interaction with bovine hemoglobin
Journal of Luminescence, 2015Abstract In this article, the UV–vis absorption, steady state/time resolved fluorescence spectroscopy and synchronous fluorescence, circular dichrosim (CD) spectroscopy are used to investigate the interaction of artemisinin (QHS) and 9-hydroxy-artemisinin (9-OH QHS) with BHb, respectively.
