Perspectives on New Vaccines against Arboviruses Using Insect-Specific Viruses as Platforms

open access: yesVaccines, 2021
Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are global pathogens circulating endemically with local explosive outbreaks and constant encroachment into new locations. Few vaccines against arboviruses exist; most for humans are in development or clinical trials.

Bioinspired Mechanically Robust Organic–Inorganic Hybridized Bio‐Adhesives With up to 50% Inorganic Components by Bi‐Continuous Phase Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A robust plant protein adhesive was prepared by fabricating a bi‐continuous organic–inorganic hybrid structure. Compared with traditional organic–inorganic hybrid adhesives, the addition amount of inorganic phase is increased from 0.2%–3.0% to 50%, and the strength and toughness are increased by 6 and 121 times, respectively.

Identification of Proteins Bound to Dengue Viral RNA In Vivo Reveals New Host Proteins Important for Virus Replication

open access: yesmBio, 2016
Dengue virus is the most prevalent cause of arthropod-borne infection worldwide. Due to the limited coding capacity of the viral genome and the complexity of the viral life cycle, host cell proteins play essential roles throughout the course of viral ...

Proteomic fingerprinting of Neotropical hard tick species (Acari: Ixodidae) using a self-curated mass spectra reference library.

open access: yesPLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, 2020
Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) time-of-flight mass spectrometry is an analytical method that detects macromolecules that can be used for proteomic fingerprinting and taxonomic identification in arthropods.

Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors: Ex-vivo expression of functional, non-hybrid, heteropentameric receptors from a marine arthropod, Lepeophtheirus salmonis.

open access: yesPLoS Pathogens, 2020
Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) are ligand-gated ion channels mostly located in the post-synaptic membrane of cholinergic synapses. The natural neurotransmitter is acetylcholine, but they are also the direct targets for neonicotinoids ...

Two Routes to Land: Genomic Underpinnings of Parallel Aerial Egg Deposition in Aquatic Old‐World Pila and New‐World Pomacea (Ampullariidae)

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Comparative genomics of Gondwana‐diverged Pila and Pomacea reveals parallel evolution of aerial oviposition. Convergent chromosomal rearrangements reshape regulatory landscapes within topologically associating domains. Lineage‐specific gene family expansions and viral‐derived perivitelline proteins (PV1) underpin desiccation resistance.

Multiple Salivary Proteins from Aedes aegypti Mosquito Bind to the Zika Virus Envelope Protein

open access: yesViruses, 2022
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are important vectors of several debilitating and deadly arthropod-borne (arbo) viruses, including Yellow Fever virus, Dengue virus, West Nile virus and Zika virus (ZIKV).

Secreted Nonstructural Protein 3 is a Pathogenic Determinant of Orbivirus

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study uncovers a conserved PIP2‐dependent secretory pathway of orbivirus NS3 that induces vascular leakage. Pharmacological disruption of PIP2‐NS3 interaction significantly reduces viral pathogenicity and provides protective efficacy in murine models, establishing PIP2‐mediated NS3 secretion as both a key virulence determinant and a promising ...

Rickettsial pathogen augments tick vesicular-associated membrane proteins for infection and survival in the vector host

open access: yesmBio
Anaplasma phagocytophilum is an obligate intracellular rickettsial pathogen that infects humans and animals. The black-legged tick Ixodes scapularis acts as a vector and transmits this bacterium to the vertebrate host.
