Portuguese Artificial Reefs

2000
The use of artificial reefs for marine habitat enhancement is a recent development in Portuguese coastal waters. To date, four reefs have been constructed, off the south coast of the Algarve. The first two were established in 1990 as a pilot project supported by the Integrated Plan for Regional Development (PIDR).

Portuguese Artificial Reef Modules

2022
Artificial reefs (AR) for diving must have certain characteristics that are not activity-limiting. Likewise, these characteristics are generally fundamental for good diving experiences. In this aspect, AR must not be at a great depth, and they must have a diverse bio-colonization by several species of various taxa and attract diver interest.

Stabilized Coal Ash Artificial Reef Studies

Chemistry and Ecology, 1995
Abstract In 1989, an experimental stabilized coal ash reef was deployed in Poole Bay off the southern coast of the UK. Three different mixtures of pulverised fuel ash, gypsum, flue gas desulphurisation sludge and cement were used along with concrete controls. the aim was to study the environmental compatibility of the reef materials through heavy metal

Artificial Reefs: The Importance of Comparisons with Natural Reefs

Fisheries, 1997
Abstract Methods used to evaluate the performance of an artificial reef will vary according to the purpose for which the reef was built. To determine how well artificial reefs mitigate losses due to human activities on natural reefs, the performance of artificial reefs should be evaluated using contemporaneous comparisons with relatively undisturbed ...

Investing in Artificial Reefs

2000
Economic appraisal of an artificial reef proposal is an essential step in determining the role such a structure may play in, say, fishery enhancement. Reef projects may be appraised from the perspective of either a private commercial firm or society as a whole, though the emphasis of the present chapter will primarily be on the latter.
