In the past 40 years the coastal marine environment in the Western Ligurian Riviera has been affected by three major human activities: (1) Illegal fishing, especially otter-trawling, in the shallow (< 50 m) coastal zone where this type of gear is banned. The problem is often compounded by the use of undersize net mesh in the cod end of the trawls.
