Biosynthesis of biopterin in Ascaris lumbricoides suum

In in vivo experiments, radioactivity from [U-14C]GTP was incorporated into biopterin, and, in fact, all carbon atoms of biopterin synthesized in Ascaris lumbricoides suum originated from GTP. Biopterin was also biosynthesized in homogenates of tissue fluid and muscles of Ascaris lumbricoides suum.

The potential of multilocus electrophoretic studies for providing insight into the population biology of parasitic organisms was studied using the swine parasite Ascaris suum suum. Thirty-eight loci encoding enzymatic or nonenzymatic proteins have been resolved in extracts of adult worms by starch-gel electrophoresis.

The stability of Ascaris suum allergen A to chemical and enzymatic agents has been studied. The allergenic activity measured in the rat passive cutaneous anaphylaxis test was found to be stable to heat at 100 °C, hot acid and periodate at 4 °C but to be destroyed completely by hot alkali.

Polymorphism of malate dehydrogenase in Ascaris suum

Starch gel electrophoresis of homogenates prepared from adult Ascaris suum revealed polymorphism for the number, staining intensity, and electrophoretic mobility of the cytoplasmic isozymes of malate dehydrogenase (MDH). Five different variant isozymic patterns were found among the 2160 worms surveyed.

The ultrastructure of the intestine of Ascaris suum larvae

The intestine of the infective larva consisted of a solid column of seven cells with no lumen. The cells, which seemed to be enzymatically inactive contained large deposits of glycogen and lipid indicating that the intestine probably functioned as a storage organ at this stage.

Analysis of the cuticular collagens of Ascaris suum

The nematode cuticle is an extracellular structure composed mainly of collagens, with an insoluble epicuticle on the surface. The extracted collagens from adult Ascaris suum can be separated by SDS-PAGE into three major groups of polypeptides with apparent molecular masses of 34, 60-70 and 120-140 kDa.

Trehalose Synthesis and Hydrolysis in Ascaris suum

Minced reproductive tissue has the highest capacity to synthesize trehalose in adult ascaris. Limited synthesis was obtained with muscle tissue but neither intestine nor perienteric fluid synthesize this disaccharide. Synthesis occurs under aerobic or anaerobic conditions at pH 7.4 to 7.6.
