Integrative taxonomy supports DNA barcoding in revealing an abundant cryptic species in the United States Coastal Plain

open access: yesJournal of Systematics and Evolution, EarlyView.
We present the most densely sampled phylogeny of Carex section Lupulinae to date (107 specimens) and describe herein a new cryptic species for science from the southern United States, which is locally abundant and found in well‐explored and densely populated areas. Combining DNA sequences with morphometric data obtained from 299 samples, we Demonstrate

Antiproliferative activity of standardized herbal phytopreparation from Asclepias subulata [version 2; peer review: 2 approved, 1 not approved]

open access: yesF1000Research, 2022
Background: Several studies have shown that active compounds of Asclepias subulata (cardenolides) have antiproliferative effect on human cancer cells. Cardenolides isolated from A.

The first blush of tasting: Porcellio scaber isopod and Enchytraeus albidus enchytraeid prefer the leaf litter of invasive over native plant species

open access: yesThe European Zoological Journal
The establishment of invasive plants is a very serious threat from an ecological point of view, through decreasing biodiversity and a changing ecosystem, which affect decomposition processes.

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Mitigate Drought‐Enhanced Herbivore Performance in Maize

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, Volume 49, Issue 4, Page 2080-2094, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Drought events are becoming increasingly frequent and intense, posing major challenges to crop productivity. Beyond direct water stress, drought can indirectly affect plants by enhancing herbivore performance. While arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have been proposed to alleviate drought stress and to enhance plant resistance to herbivory ...

Common milkweed gardens increase occupancy by monarch butterflies and other specialist herbivores towards an urban centre

open access: yesInsect Conservation and Diversity, Volume 19, Issue 2, Page 380-392, March 2026.
We surveyed 119 stands of common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) across an urbanisation gradient to investigate how restored garden habitat might ameliorate the negative effects of urbanisation on specialist herbivores. Surprisingly, we found most herbivores (including the monarch butterfly) had greater occupancy on common milkweed towards an urban centre.

Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) oviposition preference on native milkweeds (Asclepias) of the northern Great Plains

open access: yesEcosphere
Milkweed (Asclepias ssp.) has faced population declines in the Northern Great Plains for several decades due primarily to agricultural conversion. Monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus), which rely on milkweed as the host plant for their larva, have also

Beneficial Insect Attraction to Milkweeds (Asclepias speciosa, Asclepias fascicularis) in Washington State, USA

open access: yesInsects, 2016
Native plant and beneficial insect associations are relatively unstudied yet are important in native habitat restoration programs for improving and sustaining conservation biological control of arthropod pests in agricultural crops.

Of walls and floors: how physical structures affect mating song detection in stridulating orthopterans

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 1, Page 141-152, February 2026.
Schematic representation of the experimental settings for one field type. Each setting was assigned one of the three treatments (i.e., walls, floors, or control). Each treatment contained an AudioMoth™ (circle), either positioned close to the ground (5 cm) or elevated (60 cm), acting as a receiver organism. Abstract Sensory ecology theory proposes that
