Methane‐Derived Carbon Contributes to Fish Biomass in a Deep, Eutrophic Reservoir

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 71, Issue 4, April 2026.
ABSTRACT Methanotrophic bacteria oxidise large amounts of biogenic methane produced in freshwater and bind the original methane carbon in their biomass. When these bacteria are consumed by other organisms, methane‐derived carbon enters food webs. Methane‐derived carbon can support a substantial part of invertebrate biomass in some freshwater ecosystems.

Nutritional effects on the expression of cryptic pigmentation in freshwater isopods

open access: yesOikos, Volume 2026, Issue 2, February 2026.
Cryptic pigmentation is a key phenotypic adaptation that helps many benthic invertebrates evade visual predators. However, little is known about whether and how the expression of pigmentation phenotypes that match the habitat background is influenced by the availability of nutritional resources.

Laying Down the Foundations for Qualitative and Quantitative Freshwater Zooplankton Metabarcoding Surveys

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 6, November–December 2025.
We designed and validated taxon‐specific metabarcoding primers for Cladocera, Copepoda and Rotifera. These primers were subsequently used to assess optimal sample preservation and DNA extraction protocols, and perform an in‐depth evaluation of key factors influencing the quantitative nature of the freshwater zooplankton metabarcoding surveys.

Assessing the Acute and Chronic Effects of Palladium on Daphnia magna and the Influence of Natural Organic Matter

open access: yesJournal of Applied Toxicology, Volume 45, Issue 11, Page 2363-2377, November 2025.
ABSTRACT In recent decades, rising industrial demand for palladium (Pd), driven by its unique properties and affordability compared to other noble metals, has increased its environmental release into aquatic systems. This highlights the need to assess its effects on organisms, given the lack of standardized toxicity studies and regulations for this ...

Behavioral response of cave and surface Asellus aquaticus to water current [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
There are many questions regarding what influences the emergence of new species. Firstly and above all, is the appearance of differences within a certain specie, where a certain part is isolated from the group and continues its own evolution.

Direct and indirect effects of chemical pollution: Fungicides alter growth, feeding, and pigmentation of the freshwater detritivore Asellus aquaticus

open access: yesEcotoxicology and Environmental Safety
Anthropogenic chemical pollutants, such as fungicides, pose significant threats to natural ecosystems. Although the direct impacts of numerous chemicals are well-documented in simple environmental contexts, their indirect impacts are poorly understood ...

Carotenoids and Carotenoproteins in Asellus aquaticus L. (Crustacea: Isopoda)

open access: yesFolia Biologica, 2005
Column (CC), thin-layer (TLC), high-performance liquid (HPLC) and ion-exchange chromatography (IEC), were used to investigate corotenoid and carotenoprotein complexes in Asellus aquaticus specimens from the Narew river. The following carotenoids were found: alpha-carotene, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, zeaxanthin, diadinoxanthin ...

Survival and Growth of A. aquaticus on Different Food Sources from Drinking Water Distribution Systems

open access: yesArthropoda
Invertebrates, including Asellidae, are part of the natural ecosystem of the drinking water distribution system (DWDS) and are known to cause a nuisance to consumers. In addition, recently, the potential role of the species Asellus aquaticus (L. 1758) in
