Spatially explicit density and its determinants for Asiatic lions in the Gir forests. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica) are an icon of conservation success, yet their status is inferred from total counts that cannot account for detection bias and double counts. With an effort of 4,797 km in 725 km2 of western Gir Protected Area, India,

Complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica). [PDF]

open access: yesMitochondrial DNA B Resour, 2016
The complete mitochondrial genome sequence 17,059 bp of Asiatic lion (Panthera leo persica) has been sequenced with the use of next generation sequencing technology using Ion Torrent PGM platform. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of Asiatic lion consists of 13 protein-coding, 22 tRNA, and two rRNA genes, and 1 control region (CR).

Osteometry of Lumbar Vertebrae of Asiatic Lion (Panthera leo) [PDF]

open access: yesTHE INDIAN JOURNAL OF VETERINARY SCIENCES AND BIOTECHNOLOGY, 2017
The anatomy of lumbar vertebrae of Asiatic lion was studied. There were seven lumbar vertebrae. The length of the body increased from the first to the sixth vertebrae, whereas the width increased up to the last vertebra. The ventral ridge was absent in first and last vertebrae.

Genetic variation in Asiatic lions and Indian tigers [PDF]

open access: yesELECTROPHORESIS, 1997
AbstractPrevious reports have suggested that Asiatic lions and tigers are highly inbred and exhibit very low levels of genetic variation. Our analyses on these species have shown much higher degrees of polymorphism than reported. Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) analysis of 38 Asiatic lions, which exist as a single population in the Gir Forest

Canine Distemper Virus in Asiatic Lions of Gujarat State, India [PDF]

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2019
In September 2018, an epizootic infection caused by canine distemper virus emerged in an Asiatic lion population in India. We detected the virus in samples from 68 lions and 6 leopards by reverse transcription PCR.

Major histocompatibility complex class I polymorphism in Asiatic lions [PDF]

open access: yesTissue Antigens, 2005
Abstract:  Asiatic lions (Panthera leo persica), whose only natural habitat in the world is the Gir forest sanctuary of Gujarat State in India, are highly endangered and are considered to be highly inbred with narrow genetic diversity. An objective assessment of genetic diversity in their immune loci will help in assessing their survivability and may ...

Variation in social organisation of lions with particular reference to the Asiatic Lions Panthera leo persica (Carnivora: Felidae) of the Gir forest, India [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Threatened Taxa, 2009
Sociality is one of the distinctive features of Lions (Panthera leo), which are the only social felids. Their evolutionary history is important both for understanding the evolution of sociality and that of other sympatric species owing to their ...

Autosomal and mtDNA Markers Affirm the Distinctiveness of Lions in West and Central Africa. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
The evolutionary history of a species is key for understanding the taxonomy and for the design of effective management strategies for species conservation. The knowledge about the phylogenetic position of the lion (Panthera leo) in West/Central Africa is

Balancing conservation planning and mitigation: perspectives from a case study of the Asiatic lions [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Ecology and Evolution, 2023
Diverse, often inter-disciplinary, approaches have been proposed to advance the conservation of lions (Panthera leo) and their natural habitats. The IUCN guidelines for the conservation of lions in Africa call for effective national policies at all ...
