Inverse sky islands: lowland river valleys drive microbial divergence while high elevations select for convergence in massive mountain ecosystems

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Mountain ecosystems are often interpreted through the lens of the ‘sky island' model, where high‐elevation habitats function as isolated archipelagos. However, this model's applicability to massive, topographically complex mountain ranges where highlands are continuous and lowlands are fragmented remains untested.

Language and Cognitive Development in Bimodal Bilingual Deaf Children in Hearing Families: Three Case Studies

open access: yesBehavioral Sciences
We investigated aspects of language and cognitive development in three bimodal bilingual deaf children in hearing families. Some previous research finds cognitive delays for deaf children, which may be due to an early lack of access to language input ...

Computationally Driven Advances in Cu‐CNT On‐Chip Interconnect Materials: From First Principles to Machine Learning

open access: yesENERGY &ENVIRONMENTAL MATERIALS, EarlyView.
A multiscale framework integrating electronic, mechanical, and thermal analysis with machine learning to optimize carbon nanotube interconnects. As the component dimensions in integrated circuits shrink to extreme scales, the complexity of interconnect systems is increasing significantly, necessitating an urgent and comprehensive upgrade of ...

Black Carbon Contribution to the Aerosol Phase and its Scavenged Fraction in Mixed Phase Clouds at the High Alpine Site Jungfraujoch (3580m asl)

open access: yes, 2006
The mass fraction of black carbon (BC) in the atmospheric aerosol and its mixing state are important for the direct aerosol climate effect. These properties also determine if BC is incorporated into cloud hydrometeors (i.e. droplets and ice crystals) and

Arterial spin labeling performs comparably to 2‐[18F]fluoro‐2‐deoxy‐D‐glucose positron emission tomography for presurgical evaluation in pediatric lesional epilepsy

open access: yesEpilepsia, EarlyView.
Abstract Objective This study was undertaken to test whether arterial spin labeling (ASL) performs comparably to 2‐[18F]fluoro‐2‐deoxy‐D‐glucose positron emission tomography (FDG‐PET), the mainstay functional imaging technique, in pediatric lesional epilepsy, while avoiding radiotracer exposure and additional sedation.

Inherited metabolic epilepsies–established diseases, new approaches

open access: yesEpilepsia Open, EarlyView.
Abstract Inherited metabolic epilepsies (IMEs) represent the inherited metabolic disorders (IMDs) in which epilepsy is a prevailing component, often determining other neurodevelopmental outcomes associated with the disorder. The different metabolic pathways affected by individual IMEs are the basis of their rarity and heterogeneity.

ASL in the Archives

open access: yes, 2023
I picked the donated material from the American Sign Language (ASL) Interpreter Education Program for two reasons. One: I attended that program 3 years ago where I, not only satisfied my foreign language requirement but played with the idea of getting a career interpreting.
