The group of rock-inhabiting Aspleniums whose center of distribution lies in the southern Appalachian Mountains is remarkable in thriving in mediacid soils, whereas the majority of other rock-ferns prefer circumneutral (slightly acid to slightly alkaline) habitats. Some speculations as to their relationships may accordingly be worthy of record.
