Recent Progress in Laser Assisted Forming

open access: yes, 2007
Laser assisted forming means that a workpiece is selectively heated with a laser where strong deformations take place and is thus softened in order to facilitäte the deformations process.

Prediction of haplotypes for ungenotyped animals and its effect on marker-assisted breeding value estimation

open access: yes, 2010
Background: In livestock populations, missing genotypes on a large proportion of animals are a major problem to implement the estimation of marker-assisted breeding values using haplotypes.

The Use of an Air-Inflated Pillow for Assisted Recovery After General Anaesthesia in Horses: A Preliminary Study

open access: yesAnimals
Different assisted recovery techniques have been developed to enhance the safety and quality of equine recoveries. This case series evaluates the recovery of horses using an air-inflated pillow (Equi-lift®).

Comparative study between agonist and antagonist protocols in PCOS patients undergoing ICSI: a cross-sectional study

open access: yesMiddle East Fertility Society Journal, 2019
Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrinopathies affecting 5–10% of women of reproductive age. The syndrome is surrounded by controversies regarding both its diagnosis and treatment.

Structural instability impairs function of the UDP‐xylose synthase 1 Ile181Asn variant associated with short‐stature genetic syndrome in humans

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The Ile181Asn variant of human UDP‐xylose synthase (hUXS1), associated with a short‐stature genetic syndrome, has previously been reported as inactive. Our findings demonstrate that Ile181Asn‐hUXS1 retains catalytic activity similar to the wild‐type but exhibits reduced stability, a looser oligomeric state, and an increased tendency to precipitate ...

Bioethics of Assisted Reproductive Technology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
There is no doubt that for a couple who are having difficulties in conceiving, having a child is an objective good. However, it is also indisputable that assisted reproduction techniques raise clear ethical issues. In order to begin this bioethical

Assessment of Natural User Interactions for Robot-Assisted Interventions

open access: yesCurrent Directions in Biomedical Engineering, 2018
Robotic assistance in clinical interventions provides high precision and performance. However, the acceptance of such systems is still very low. The idea of collaborative robotics promises practical solutions for this problem.

The (Glg)ABCs of cyanobacteria: modelling of glycogen synthesis and functional divergence of glycogen synthases in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We reconstituted Synechocystis glycogen synthesis in vitro from purified enzymes and showed that two GlgA isoenzymes produce glycogen with different architectures: GlgA1 yields denser, highly branched glycogen, whereas GlgA2 synthesizes longer, less‐branched chains.

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Analysing restrictive and liberal approaches towards assisted suicide and euthanasia

open access: yes, 2010
MPhil (Laws)The ‘end of life’ issue in relation to assisted suicide and euthanasia is one of our prime concerns and a most widely discussed phenomenon not only in academic and official literature, but also in day-to-day life.
