Should Defined Benefit Pension Schemes be Career Average or Final Salary? [PDF]

open access: yes
There is widespread dissatisfaction amongst employers with defined benefit pension schemes, and many are switching to defined contribution schemes. Career average is a form of defined benefit scheme that has some important advantages over final salary ...

European household waste management schemes: Their effectiveness and applicability in England. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
This paper reviews European household waste management schemes and provides an insight into their effectiveness in reducing or diverting household waste. The paper also considers the feasibility of replicating such schemes in England.

Self‐dual association schemes, fusions of Hamming schemes, and partial geometric designs

open access: yes, 2023
Partial geometric designs can be constructed from basic relations of association schemes. An infinite family of partial geometric designs were constructed from the fusion schemes of certain Hamming schemes in work by Nowak et al. (2016). A general method

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Pseudocyclic association schemes and strongly regular graphs

open access: yes, 2010
Let X be a pseudocyclic association scheme in which all the nontrivial relations are strongly regular graphs with the same eigenvalues. We prove that the principal part of the first eigenmatrix of X is a linear combination of an incidence matrix of a ...

Consumer Demand for Blockchain-Enabled Peer-to-Peer Electricity Trading in the United Kingdom: An Online Survey Experiment

open access: yesEnergies, 2019
Peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading could help address grid management challenges in a decentralizing electricity system, as well as provide other social and environmental benefits.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

Terwilliger Algebras of Some Group Association Schemes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The Terwilliger algebra plays an important role in the theory of association schemes. The present paper gives the explicit structures of the Terwilliger algebras of the group association schemes of the finite groups PSL(2, 7), A6, and ...

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

Cometric Association Schemes

open access: yes, 2019
The combinatorial objects known as association schemes arise in group theory, extremal graph theory, coding theory, the design of experiments, and even quantum information theory.
