Fragmentation of asteroids and artificial satellites in orbit

Icarus, 1978
Abstract In this paper we develop expressions for the probability density in the orbital elements resulting from a spherical explosion in orbit. The usual power law mass distribution is employed, and it is assumed that equipartition holds among velocity dispersions and masses. The asteroid families Themis, Eos, and Coronis (at least) show an envelope

Do asteroids have satellites?

1989
A substantial body of indirect evidence suggests that some asteroids have satellites, although none has been detected unambiguously. Collisions between asteroids provide physically plausible mechanisms for the production of binaries, but these operate with low probability; only a small minority of asteroids are likely to have satellites.

Prediction of stellar occultations by satellite of asteroids

2004
Our group is working on the orbit determination of asteroid satellites on the last four years gathering data recorded with several AO systems. Based upon our observations, we focused specifically on models for (22) Kalliope, (121) Hermione, (45) Eugenia and (90) Antiope systems characterizing accurately their dynamical and physical properties (Marchis ...
