Generation of a measurable magnetic field in a metal asteroid with a rubble-pile core
Paleomagnetic records of iron meteorites of the IVA group suggest that their parent body (an inward-solidified metal asteroid) possessed an internal magnetic field. The origin of this magnetism is enigmatic because inward solidification typically leads to light element release from the top of the liquid, which depresses convection and dynamo activity ...

Asteroid-Generated Tsunamis: A Review
AbstractWe study ocean waves caused by an asteroid airburst located over the ocean. The concern is that the waves would damage distant coastal cities. Simple qualitative analysis suggests that the wave energy is proportional to the ocean depth and the strength and speed of the blast.

Tsunami generation and propagation from the Mjølnir asteroid impact [PDF]
Abstract— In the late Jurassic period, about 142 million years ago, an asteroid hit the shallow paleo‐Barents Sea, north of present‐day Norway. The geological structure resulting from the impact is today known as the Mjølnir crater. The present work attempts to model the generation and the propagation of the tsunami from the Mjølnir impact.

Large main-belt asteroids are generally not Maclaurin or Jacobi ellipsoids
Aims.A recent major high-angular-resolution imaging survey of 42 large main-belt asteroids (D > 100 km) with VLT/SPHERE has provided shape models of these bodies with an unprecedented accuracy. We ask whether the shapes of these bodies correspond to Maclaurin or Jacobi hydrostatic equilibrium figures.Methods.To address this question, we compared the

Unbiased orbit determination for the next generation asteroid/comet surveys [PDF]
In the next generation surveys, the discovery of moving objects can be successful only if an observation strategy and the identication/orbit determination procedure are appropriate for the diverse apparent motions of the target sub-populations. The observations must accurately measure the displacement over a short interval of time; observations ...

ASTEROIDS: A Stixel Tracking Extrapolation-Based Relevant Obstacle Impact Detection System
This paper presents a vision-based collision-warning system for ADAS in intelligent vehicles, with a focus on urban scenarios. In most current systems, collision warnings are based on radar, or on monocular vision using pattern recognition.

The Fast Generation of the Reachable Domain for Collision-Free Asteroid Landing
For the mission requirement of collision-free asteroid landing with a given time of flight (TOF), a fast generation method of landing reachable domain based on section and expansion is proposed. First, to overcome the difficulties of trajectory optimization caused by anti-collision path constraints, a two-stage collision-free trajectory optimization ...
