The presence of interstellar complex organic molecules (COMs) has been baffling astrochemists for a long time. Methyl formate and glycolaldehyde are widely detected but their abundances mismatch kinetic astrochemical model predictions. Here, the formation of these two COMs is characterized onto a mixed ice surface, highlighting the importance of ...

Interstellar formation of lactaldehyde, a key intermediate in the methylglyoxal pathway
Aldehydes are ubiquitous in star-forming regions and carbonaceous chondrites, serving as essential intermediates in metabolic pathways and molecular mass growth processes to vital biomolecules necessary for the origins of life.

Nature's Starships II: Simulating the Synthesis of Amino Acids in Meteorite Parent Bodies
Carbonaceous chondrite meteorites are known for having high water and organic material contents, including amino acids. Here we address the origin of amino acids in the warm interiors of their parent bodies (planetesimals) within a few million years of ...

In the last 40 years a wide range of molecules, including neutrals, cations and anions, containing up to 13 atoms—in addition to detections of C60 and C70 — have been found in the harsh environment of the interstellar medium. The exquisite sensitivity and very high spectral and, more recently, spatial resolution, of modern telescopes has enabled the ...

In bulk carbonic acid (e.g., in interstellar icy dust grains) cluster formation produces two distinct UV‐Vis spectral features redshifted by ≈2 eV (25 nm) and by ≈5 eV (80 nm) compared to gas phase single molecule carbonic acid 's adiabatic ionization energy. Theory and experiment were used to investigate the origin of these shifts.

Theoretical approaches for studying Astrochemistry
The most popular ab initio theoretical approaches that are used to study the gas phase astrochemical reactivity are presented. The methods that are needed for the electronic calculation and the statistical approaches that are used for determining the ...

Water Vapor in the Inner 25 AU of a Young Disk around a Low-Mass Protostar
Water is one of the key molecules in the physical and chemical evolution of star- and planet-forming regions. We here report the first spatially resolved observation of thermal emission of (an isotopologue of) water with the Plateau de Bure ...

Evidence is presented that prebiotically accessible mellitic (benzenehexacarboxylic) acid (MAc) is forming liquid droplets with short poly‐L‐lysine. The capacity of MAc to induce liquid‐liquid phase separation with short oligocations, along with abiotic synthesis routes, makes MAc a viable candidate for an ingredient of early prebiotic membraneless ...
