Infiltrative Astrocytomas (Diffuse Astrocytoma, Anaplastic Astrocytoma, Glioblastoma)
2009Infiltrative astrocytomas represent a diverse group of glial tumors of variable degree of malignancy that share in common the qualities of astrocytic differentiation and an inherent ability to diffusely invade central nervous system (CNS) parenchyma.

Intracerebral Astrocytoma in a Horse
Journal of Comparative Pathology, 2020An 8-year-old Anglo-European gelding with progressive neurological signs was humanely destroyed and submitted for necropsy examination. The right parietal cortex was disrupted by a well-demarcated, intraparenchymal, 1.5 cm diameter, tan, homogeneous, dense mass.

Brain tumor grading has always been tied to predicting prognosis. Originally, the grading system had four grades, then three-grade systems became popular; now, four grades are in vogue. There is less evidence than might be supposed for the validity of these systems, however.

Metabolism of the malignant astrocytoma
Neurosurgery, 1990A comprehensive review of the biochemical organization of the malignant astrocytoma is presented. The review is intended for neurosurgeons. It outlines the metabolic flow of events beginning with energy and substrate utilization, followed by structural components (protein, lipids, etc.) and tumor cell secretory products, and ending with nucleic acid ...

The Recurrent Cerebellar Astrocytoma
Pediatric Neurosurgery, 19835 children with six recurrences of cerebellar astrocytoma are reviewed. The clinical course is correlated with the grading system of Gilles for posterior fossa gliomas. Changes in the Gilles classification were found in some tumors at the time of reoperation. The delayed occurrence of hydrocephalus signified recurrence of tumor.

Astrocytoma of the cerebral aqueduct
Child's Nervous System, 1987The authors report the case of a 9-year-old girl with a low-grade astrocytoma of the mesencephalon that occluded the sylvian aqueduct. Symptoms, signs, and neuroradiological investigations led to the clinical impression of aqueductal stenosis. The presence of a tumor was diagnosed by cerebrospinal fluid cytology and confirmed at postmortem examination.

Anaplastic astrocytomas are uncommon gliomas that preferentially affect young to middle-aged adults. The prognosis of a patient with an anaplastic astrocytoma is better than one with a glioblastoma, although this disease typically dedifferentiates into a glioblastoma at progression, and as such is ultimately incurable and fatal.
