MICROGLIA IN GEMISTOCYTIC ASTROCYTOMAS
Neurosurgery, 2007Although gemistocytic astrocytomas are graded as World Health Organization II astrocytomas, they behave more aggressively than other astrocytomas. Their proliferative potential is low, and it remains an intriguing question why these tumors are so biologically "successful." They show a high mutation rate of the P53 gene, cytological abnormalities, and ...

Anaplastic astrocytoma in adults
Critical Reviews in Oncology/Hematology, 2007Anaplastic astrocytoma is an uncommon disease in the adult population. Prognosis is influenced by age, symptom duration, mental status and Karnofsky performance status. A truly complete resection, which is a recognized independent prognostic factor, is not possible and recurrence in the surgical cavity is common.

Substrates for Astrocytoma Invasion
Neurosurgery, 1995A better understanding of the influences of specific extracellular substrates, including proteins, glycosaminoglycans, and parenchymal cells, on the invasive behavior of glioma cells would potentially lead to novel forms of treatment aimed at confining the tumor.

Erythropoietin and astrocytomas
Journal of Neurosurgery, 2007Mohyeldin et al. have studied the role of hypoxia-inducible erythropoietin (EPO) signaling in the growth, invasiveness, and response of human astrocytomas and other cancers to cisplatin chemotherapy. They have shown that EPO and its receptor (EPOR) are upregulated in high-grade gliomas as opposed to low-grade gliomas.
