Designing Defect Structure and Interfacial Strain in an Epitaxial VN Bilayer Film by Tailoring N Concentration

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
The N concentration in an epitaxial VN bilayer is tailored from overstoichiometric V0.49N0.51 to understoichiometric V0.56N0.44. Based on ab initio, diffraction, and microscopy data, the overstoichiometric V0.49N0.51 layer contains V vacancies, N Frenkel pairs, and a high density of dislocations.

Integrated Optics in Astronomical Interferometry [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1994
Integrated optical components (mostly single-mode fibers and couplers) can be used to achieve several functions that are needed in interferometry: coherent beam transportation and recombination, pathlength modulation and control for fringe tracking and double Fourier interferometry, spatial filtering of the wavefront and interferogram calibration ...

Photocatalytic Water Splitting on the Lunar Surface: Prospects for In Situ Resource Utilization

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Interfaces, EarlyView.
Water has been found in craters on the moon nearby locations which are illuminated >80% of the time. Photocatalysis uses energy from sunlight to drive chemical reactions such as water splitting to produce oxygen and hydrogen. It is a scalable technology that requires lighter equipment and utilizes resources available on the moon. ABSTRACT The discovery

On-sky Demonstration of Second-stage Wave-front Control with a Photonic Lantern

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Ground-based direct imaging of exoplanets at high contrast requires precise correction of atmospheric turbulence using adaptive optics (AO). The planet-to-star contrast ratio at small angular separations from the host star is often limited by non-common ...

Primary beam calibration for commensal telescopes utilizing offset optics

open access: yesFrontiers in Astronomy and Space Sciences
IntroductionAccurate primary beam calibration is essential for precise brightness measurements in radio astronomy. The VLA Low-band Ionosphere and Transient Experiment (VLITE) faces challenges in calibration due to the offset Cassegrain optics used in ...

New Optics for Astronomical Polarimetry [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2014
AbstractThere is a variety of new polarization optics that can be employed for polarimetry and for polarization control. Many are enabled by new materials including polymers and liquid crystals. We survey here these and other relatively new devices and components available commercially that open new possibilities for astronomers.

New Symbiotic Stars from LAMOST DR10 Spectra and Multiband Photometry

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The Symbiotic star (SySt) is a long-period interacting binary system, typically consisting of a white dwarf (WD) and a red giant surrounded by a nebula. These systems are natural astrophysical laboratories for investigating binary star evolution. In this

High‐Transmission Mid‐Infrared Bandpass Filters using Hybrid Metal‐Dielectric Metasurfaces for CO2 Sensing

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, Volume 13, Issue 8, March 13, 2025.
This article presents a hybrid metal‐dielectric metasurface in transmission mode for mid‐infrared (MIR) spectroscopy. Composed of germanium on aluminium cylinders atop a calcium fluoride substrate, the metasurface achieves 80% transmission efficiency at λ = 2.6 µm with a narrow full‐width‐half‐maximum of 0.4 µm.

A Dual‐Emissive DNA‐Templated Silver Nanocluster with Near‐Infrared I and II Emission

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, Volume 13, Issue 8, March 13, 2025.
This study presents a dual‐emissive DNA‐stabilized silver nanocluster with a nanosecond‐lived NIR‐I emission band and a microsecond‐lived NIR‐II emission band. Mass spectrometry establishes that the nanocluster has molecular formula (DNA)2[Ag17]11+. DNA sequence variations reveal critical nucleobases for stabilization, and modifications at the DNA 5 ...
