Exceptional astronomical seeing conditions above Dome C in Antarctica

Nature, 2004
One of the most important considerations when planning the next generation of ground-based optical astronomical telescopes is to choose a site that has excellent 'seeing'--the jitter in the apparent position of a star that is caused by light bending as it passes through regions of differing refractive index in the Earth's atmosphere.

Fundamental and Applied Aspects of Astronomical “Seeing”

Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics, 1985
1. PREFACE Despite recent advances in the use of spacecraft as observatory platforms, much astronomy is still conducted from the surface of the Earth, as the existence of an IAU Commission on Site Identification and Protection testifies. The literature on astronomical seeing and observatory site selection is widely scattered throughout journals and ...

Nowcasting Astronomical Seeing: Towards an Operational Approach

Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1995
In Murtagh and Sarazin (1993), the ability to regress seeing on a set of near-ground meterological variables was assessed. The present article proceeds towards the following operational framework: we obtain median seeing estimates for the night, given knowledge of ambient ground meterological conditions.

Measuring astronomical seeing: The DA/IAC DIMM

Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1995
Accurate, absolute and reproducible measurements are the expected qualities of any instrument. A Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM) is presented which assesses astronomical seeing with those requirements. It has been designed also to be reliable, simple, trasportable, and to be easy to set up, operate and maintain.

On Astronomical Seeing

Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh, 1906
In the Annual Report of the Smithsonian Institution for 1902 Prof. Langley has published an important note on “Good Seeing,” in which he describes some experiments undertaken with the view of improving the definition of telescopic images, so far as it depends on the conditions of the air in the vicinity of the instrument.

Astronomical seeing estimation in Antarctica

Experimental Astronomy, 1995
A valuable seeing estimation at Baia Terra Nova, Antarctica is deduced from meterological data by means of a model. A sounding balloon launching campaign was conducted during the late spring 1993 and summer 1993–94. Using certain assumptions seeing is estimated in daytime and spring-summer conditions.

Instrumental Recording of Astronomical Seeing

Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1963
The quality of astronomical seeing can be measured objectively and continuously by placing a reticle in the form of a fine grid or lattice in the focal plane of a telescope and analyzing the spectrum of frequencies in the transmitted light of a star with the aid of a phototube, a.c. amplifier, wave filters, and recorder.

Medical Software has Astronomers Seeing Stars

Computing in Science & Engineering, 2008
A project at Harvard University is proving that two very different disciplines have very much in common. The astronomical medicine project (http://astromed.iic.harvard.edu/) is working to convert medical imaging software into tools that fuel discoveries in astronomy. But if the scientists behind the project have their way, any discipline that relies on

Attempt to assess astronomical ?seeing? using a model

Astrophysics and Space Science, 1996
The degradation of astronomic images by optical inhomogeneities in the earth's atmosphere is generally called “seeing”. It represents the angular diameter of the stellar images as seen through a turbulent medium. Several techniques can be used to determine this parameter.

The astronomical seeing measurements at Langkawi National Observatory

2015 International Conference on Space Science and Communication (IconSpace), 2015
We present seeing measurements of Langkawi National Observatory during the period from 2014 May 6 to 2015 March 26. The measurements were carried out with Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM) of STV and Alcor system. The median seeing was measured to be best at 0.8 arcseconds in May 2014 with STV system and 0.5 arcseconds in December 2015 with ...
