Integrating Satellite‐Based and Participatory Spatial Analyses for Local, Contextualised, and Nuanced Extreme Heat Hotspot Mapping in Overheated Urban Southeast Asia

open access: yesSustainable Development, Volume 34, Issue S2, Page 1015-1033, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Rapid urbanisation in Southeast Asia intensifies extreme‐heat exposure, especially where high population density, extensive impervious surfaces, and limited green cover coincide. This study combines multi‐decadal satellite‐derived land surface temperature (LST) mapping with spatial regression and community participatory mapping to locate ...

Compound Climate Events and Cascading Impacts in the IPCC AR6: Analysis of Gaps and Avenues for the AR7

open access: yesWIREs Climate Change, Volume 17, Issue 2, March/April 2026.
The analysis of the IPCC AR6 WGI (2021) and WGII (2022) reports reveals that compound weather and climate events and risks (CE) mainly affect Oceania and Africa, and that the cascading impacts (CI) of climate change are particularly severe in the Arctic. Coastal and urban areas are the most cited archetypes in regard to CE and CI in these reports.

The Post‐2020 Surge in Global Atmospheric Methane Observed in Ground‐Based Observations

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas with high radiative forcing and a relatively short atmospheric lifetime of around a decade. We used a decade‐long data set (2011–2022) from the Fourier transform spectrometer at the California Laboratory for Atmospheric Remote Sensing (CLARS‐FTS) to quantify a dramatic increase in methane observed in ...

Inferring Cenozoic Cover Thickness and Bedrock Sedimentary Material in 3D From Geophysical Data Using Machine Learning Algorithms: A Case Study in the Lockington Region, Victoria, Australia

open access: yesEarth and Space Science, Volume 13, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract This study presents a supervised machine learning approach to constructing a 3D geological model for the Lockington area in Victoria, Australia, by integrating borehole observations, geophysical surveys (magnetic, gravity, and radiometric), and elevation data.

Laboratory Measurements of Rise Velocity for Individual, Hydrate‐Free and Hydrate‐Coated Gas Bubbles in Water

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems, Volume 27, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Tracking methane transport becomes more complicated in the deep ocean where seafloor release of methane gas bubbles occurs at the high pressures and low temperatures conducive to hydrate formation on bubble surfaces. Gas hydrate formation can make the bubble surface rigid, preventing the dynamic interplay between bubble size, shape and rise ...
