High-Energy Astrophysics in the 2020s and Beyond [PDF]
With each passing decade, we gain new appreciation for the dynamic, connected, and often violent nature of the Universe. This reality necessarily places the study of high-energy processes at the very heart of modern astrophysics.

Inter‐Solar‐Cycle Variability of Extreme Geomagnetic Storms
Abstract The occurrence of extreme space weather events, and, in particular, severe geomagnetic storms, while rare, can result in disproportionately large societal consequences. Accurate estimates of their likelihood over the timescale of a solar cycle or longer can provide crucial and actionable information for policymakers.

Abstract The outward transport of plasma and magnetic fluxes in the gas giant magnetospheres is balanced with a return flow of flux tubes emptied through magnetic reconnection. Evidence of interchange motions between inward and outward moving flux tubes have long been reported around Jupiter and Saturn.

Clustering with phylogenetic tools in astrophysics
Phylogenetic approaches are finding more and more applications outside the field of biology. Astrophysics is no exception since an overwhelming amount of multivariate data has appeared in the last twenty years or so. In particular, the diversification of

Electromagnetic Ion Cyclotron Waves in a Magnetic Reconnection Exhaust at Earth's Magnetopause
Abstract Plasma waves can initiate, regulate, or reflect magnetic reconnection efficiently converting magnetic energy into plasma energy. While waves ranging from below the ion cyclotron frequency to above the electron plasma frequency are commonly observed near reconnection sites, electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves—frequent in other plasma ...

Observation of a Knotted Electron Diffusion Region in Earth's Magnetotail Reconnection
Abstract Magnetic reconnection is a fundamental plasma process that alters the magnetic field topology and releases magnetic energy. Most numerical simulations and spacecraft observations assume a two‐dimensional diffusion region, with the electron diffusion region (EDR) embedded in the same plane as the ion diffusion region (IDR) and a uniform guide ...

Abstract Geomagnetically Induced Currents (GICs) are a hazard to power systems. In this letter, we present a case study to understand why a Sudden‐Commencement‐associated 20A GIC spike, measured at mid‐latitude in Virginia, US, increased to 30A within 2 min of interplanetary shock arrival.
