The Passage of the Solar System through the Edge of the Local Bubble

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The Sun moves through the interstellar medium (ISM) at a velocity of ∼19 pc Myr ^−1 , making the conditions outside the solar system vary with time over millions of years.

New Mass-Loss Measurements from Astrospheric Lyα Absorption [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2005
Measurements of stellar mass-loss rates are used to assess how wind strength varies with coronal activity and age for solar-like stars. Mass loss generally increases with activity, but we find evidence that winds suddenly weaken at a certain activity threshold.

The Global Structure of the Heliosphere

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
As the Sun moves through the local interstellar medium (LISM), it emits charged particles, creating the heliosphere occupied by the plasma of solar origin.

Magnetic activity, high-energy radiation and variability: from young solar analogs to low-mass objects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Magnetic activity on cool stars expresses itself in a bewildering variety of radiative and particle output originating from magnetic regions between the photosphere and the corona.

The Velocity Distribution of the Nearest Interstellar Gas

open access: yes, 2002
The bulk flow velocity for the cluster of interstellar cloudlets within about 30 pc of the Sun is determined from optical and ultraviolet absorption line data, after omitting from the sample stars with circumstellar disks or variable emission lines and ...

Magnetic Trapping of Galactic Cosmic Rays in the Outer Heliosheath and Their Preferential Entry into the Heliosphere

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
This paper examines the geometry of interstellar magnetic field lines close to the boundary of the heliosphere in the direction of the unperturbed local interstellar magnetic field, where the field lines are spread apart by the heliopause (HP).

Signatures of Reconnection and a Split Heliospheric Tail in High-energy Energetic Neutral Atoms

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The shape of the heliosphere, regarded as comet-like since the 1960s, has recently been the subject of intense debate in the last decade. There is disagreement as to whether the heliospheric tail extends to ∼10,000 au in a comet-like shape or if it is ...

A Search for Lyα Emission from the Astrosphere of 40 Eridani A

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2003
We report the results of Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the nearby (d = 5.0 pc) K1 V star 40 Eri A, which we use to search for scattered Lyα emission surrounding the star indicative of the interaction between the stellar wind and the interstellar medium (ISM).

Lyα Absorption in a “Croissant-like” Heliosphere

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
Ly α absorption profiles have been used to detect astrospheres and heliospheric absorption from the hydrogen wall and heliotail. Using magnetohydrodynamic models of the heliosphere, we can compare simulated to observed Ly α profiles to probe the neutral ...
