Genotoxicity assessment of polluted urban streams using a native fish Astyanax altiparanae
Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health, Part A, 2019Water quality has declined globally due to increased contamination of aquatic ecosystems. The use of fish genotoxicity biomarkers may improve and complement parameters for environmental risk assessment. The aim of this study was to assess the genotoxicity of samples collected from streams of the Jordão River, a tributary of the Paranaíba River, Brazil ...

SummaryThis study aimed to describe testicular and its main ducts structure in the yellowtail tetra Astyanax altiparanae, contributing to the knowledge of the region in which semen is produced, storage and released, focusing mainly on the dynamic of germinal epithelium and Sertoli cells during germ cell maturation.

The genus Astyanax comprises small characin fish of the neotropical region. The so-called 'yellow-tailed characins' compose one of the most widely distributed Astyanax groups. A. altiparanae and A. aff. bimaculatus, are evolutionarily closely related and commonly found in several Brazilian hydrographic basins.

Glyphosate-based herbicides are extensively utilized in Neotropical agriculture for weed control. Despite their widespread application, concerns regarding water contamination and its consequential impacts on aquatic organisms persist. Notably, there remains a dearth of studies investigating the effects of glyphosate on Neotropical fish species.
