Advanced Materials for Biologics Delivery to Brain Tumors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Material innovation is central to unlocking the therapeutic potential of biologics against many central nervous system diseases, including brain cancer. By engineering carriers with controlled transport, targeting, and release properties, advanced materials can overcome the blood–brain barrier and tumor microenvironment, improving the delivery of ...

Asymptomatic and sub-microscopic malaria infection in Kayah State, eastern Myanmar [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Myanmar has the heaviest burden of malaria in the Greater Mekong Sub-region. Asymptomatic Plasmodium spp. infections are common in this region and may represent an important reservoir of transmission that must be targeted for malaria elimination.; A mass

Phosphorylated STYK1 Promotes Gemcitabine Resistance via Autophagy‐Mediated Cancer Stemness in Pancreatic Cancer

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Gemcitabine resistance remains a major challenge in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma. This study identifies STYK1 as a key mediator of chemoresistance through autophagy‐dependent maintenance of cancer stemness. Gemcitabine‐activated AMPK phosphorylates STYK1 at Ser91 and Ser304, enhancing autophagy and stemness.

Understanding P. falciparum Asymptomatic Infections: A Proposition for a Transcriptomic Approach

open access: yesFrontiers in Immunology, 2019
Malaria is still a significant public health burden in the tropics. Infection with malaria causing parasites results in a wide range of clinical disease presentations, from severe to uncomplicated or mild, and in the poorly understood asymptomatic ...

Semen Quality of Men With Asymptomatic Chlamydial Infection [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Andrology, 2004
ABSTRACT: We have shown previously that the in vitro exposure of spermatozoa to elementary bodies (EBs) of Chlamydia trachomatis can lead to sperm death over a number of hours of incubation. As such, we have hypothesized that the ejaculates of men with a chlamydial infection could contain increased numbers of nonmotile (dead) spermatozoa if they are ...

Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) for point-of-care detection of asymptomatic low-density malaria parasite carriers in Zanzibar. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic, low parasite density malaria infections are difficult to detect with currently available point-of-care diagnostics. This study piloted a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) kit for field-friendly, high-throughput ...

A Clinical Study of Decellularized Tissue Engineering Hyaline Cartilage Graft (dLhCG) for Articular Cartilage Repair

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Current clinical approaches for knee cartilage repair are often limited by hypertrophy and fibrosis in the regenerated tissues. A decellularized tissue‐engineered hyaline cartilage graft (dLhCG), composed of a type II collagen‐based extracellular matrix, has been developed to overcome this limitation.

Asymptomatic infection in individuals from the municipality of Barcelos (Brazilian Amazon) is not associated with the anti-Plasmodium falciparum glycosylphosphatidylinositol antibody response

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 2013
Anti-glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI) antibodies (Abs) may reflect and mediate, at least partially, anti-disease immunity in malaria by neutralising the toxic effect of parasitic GPI.

Influenza virus prevalence in asymptomatic and symptomatic subjects during pandemic and postpandemic periods

open access: yes, 2015
Background: in 2009, Influenza A(H1N1) pdm09 had a major effect on global health, causing thousands of deaths. However, the results of asymptomatic infection in transmission has not been well studied.

Frequent and persistent, asymptomatic Plasmodium falciparum infections in African infants, characterized by multilocus genotyping [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
To determine the duration and complexity of naturally acquired Plasmodium falciparum infections in small children, a longitudinal cohort study of 143 newborns was conducted in coastal Ghana.
