Global denoising is asymptotically optimal

2014 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2014
In this paper an upper bound on the decay rate of the mean-squared error for global image denoising is derived. As image size increases, this upper bound decays to zero; that is, the global denoising is asymptotically optimal. Unlike patch-based methods such as BM3D, this property only holds for global denoising schemes.

Asymptotically Optimal CFAR Detectors

IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, 2015
This paper investigates the asymptotic optimality of the Constant False Alarm Rate (CFAR) tests obtained using the Minimal Invariant Group (MIG) reduction. We show that the CFAR tests obtained after MIG reduction using the Wald test is a Separating Function Estimation Test (SFET) and that the Generalized Likelihood Ratio Test (GLRT) and the Rao test ...

Asymptotically optimal block quantization

IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 1979
In 1948 W. R. Bennett used a companding model for nonuniform quantization and proposed the formula D \: = \: \frac{1}{12N^{2}} \: \int \: p(x) [ E(x) ]^{-2} \dx for the mean-square quantizing error where N is the number of levels, p (x) is the probability density of the input, and E \prime (x) is the slope of the compressor curve.

Asymptotically Optimal Distributed Censoring

2006 IEEE International Symposium on Information Theory, 2006
We consider the problem of Bayesian decentralized binary detection in a sensor network in which the sensors have access to some side information that affects the statistics of the measurements they make. Sensors can decide whether or not to make a measurement and transmit a message to the fusion center ("censoring"), and also have a choice of the ...

The asymptotics of optimal (equiripple) filters

IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, 1999
Summary: For equiripple filters, the relation among the filter length \(N+1\), the transition bandwidth \(\Delta\omega\), and the optimal passband and stopband errors \(\delta_p\) and \(\delta_s\) has been a secret for more than 20 years. This paper is aimed at solving this mystery.

Optimal Lossless Data Compression: Non-Asymptotics and Asymptotics

IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 2014
This paper provides an extensive study of the behavior of the best achievable rate (and other related fundamental limits) in variable-length strictly lossless compression. In the non-asymptotic regime, the fundamental limits of fixed-to-variable lossless compression with and without prefix constraints are shown to be tightly coupled.

Asymptotic Optimality of Isoperimetric Constants

Journal of Theoretical Probability, 2011
This paper deals with the \(L^2\)-geometrically ergodic convergence in terms of the isoperimetric method. The geometric method is well known and has been used a lot in the last two decades. As illustrated by some examples in Section 5 of the paper, the method can be asymptotically optimal, even though this does not happen often. Generally speaking, the

On the asymptotic optimality of orthoregressional estimators

Journal of Applied and Industrial Mathematics, 2016
Summary: It is shown that the ortho-regressional (STLS) parameter estimators in linear algebraic systems (including autonomous difference equations with matrix coefficients) converge to the maximum likelihood estimators and thus become asymptotically best in the limit case of large variances of the random coordinates on the variety of solutions to the ...
