Transient Athetosis Induced by Tiagabine [PDF]
Summary: Movement disorders have been reported with use of different antiepileptic drugs (AEDs). We report a 32‐year‐old woman, affected by a symptomatic focal drug‐resistant epilepsy and a mild hemiparesis, with acute athetoid movements, transiently linked to increasing tiagabine (TGB) therapy.

Athetosis is characterized by irregular, slow, writhing, bizarre movements seen in hands and feet. Athetosis is classified as minor athetosis and major athetosis based on its magnitude. Minor athetosis is seen in patients with mild cerebral palsy. Major athetosis is caused by organic lesions of the striatum, including cerebral palsy, as a residual ...

Syringomyelic dystonia and athetosis
Movement Disorders, 1999Two patients with movement disorders associated with syringomyelia are described, one of whom developed unusual torticollis, and the other had choreoathetoid-dystonic movements of the hand and arm. In each case, the movements resolved with decompression of the syrinx. The literature is reviewed and possible mechanisms explored.
