Forecasting Annual Harvests of Atlantic and Gulf Menhaden

North American Journal of Fisheries Management, 2006
Abstract Continuous records of annual landings and fishing effort exist in the Atlantic purse-seine fishery for Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus since 1940 and the Gulf of Mexico fishery for Gulf menhaden B. patronus since 1946.

Spawning and Rearing Atlantic Menhaden

The Progressive Fish-Culturist, 1981
Abstract Two-year-old Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) held in the laboratory at ambient temperatures and salinities for more than 1 year, were induced to spawn by injecting first human chorionic gonadotropin and then carp pituitary powder. Spawning took place at temperatures of 16 to 20°C in a 2,100-L indoor tank modified to recover the buoyant

Mycobacterial Infection in Laboratory-Maintained Atlantic Menhaden

Journal of Aquatic Animal Health, 2005
Abstract Mycobacteriosis can be a chronic wasting disease found in many species of fish examined from wild-caught, cultured, and aquarium-reared populations. An Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus with an open ulcer from a wild-caught, laboratory-maintained population was sampled for microbiology. Mycobacterium spp.

A Sampler for Capturing Larval and Juvenile Atlantic Menhaden

North American Journal of Fisheries Management, 2005
Abstract Interest in capturing larval and juvenile Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus for use in laboratory studies required the design and construction of a sampling device that would allow us to make collections of live fish from open-water areas.

Atlantic Menhaden Larvae in Virginia Coastal Waters

Chesapeake Science, 1962
A total of 94 larvae of menhaden,Brevoortia tyrannus, ranging from 7 to 29 mm, were taken on plankton cruises in southern Chesapeake Bay and off the Virginia coast during months from November to April in 1959 and 1960. Although more abundant at inshore stations, larvae were collected as far as 40 miles offshore.

Stock assessment of the Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, fishery

2021
A stock assessment of the Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, fishery was conducted with purse-seine landings data from 1940 to 1984 and port sampling data from 1955 to 1984. These data were analyzed to determine growth rates, maximum sustainable yield (MSY), spawner-recruit relationships, and yield per recruit.

Effects of Fishing on the Atlantic Menhaden Stock: 1955–1969

Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, 1972
Abstract To determine the effect of purse-seine fishing on the Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) population, we analyzed data from 1955–69 on fishing activity and catches. Changes in fishing efficiency necessitated establishment of an abstract effort unit, the 1965 vessel-week. Catch per unit of effective effort in 1965 was one-fifth that of 1955.

Competition and Conflict in the U.S. Atlantic Coast Menhaden Industry

The American Journal of Economics and Sociology, 1988
Abstract. Fluctuations in the harvest of menhaden off the U.S. Atlantic coast, a common property resource, have caused competition and conflict among the small number of companies, two large and several small, which operate in the fishery. With no strong central management, the resource is not being exploited to the optimum and increased fishing ...

Preferred Wavelengths of Visible Light for Juvenile Atlantic Menhaden

North American Journal of Fisheries Management, 1985
Abstract Juvenile Atlantic menhaden (Brevoortia tyrannus) from Chesapeake Bay tributaries were tested for preferred wavelengths of visible light. Fish were subjected to test gradients from 460 to 660 nm at 20 nm intervals in a test trough, and light-and dark-acclimated fish were tested at three light intensities (0.1, 0.2, and 0.4 μEm -2 s -1).

Sampling statistics in the Atlantic menhaden fishery

2021
Atlantic menhaden, Brrvoortia tyrannus, the object of a major purse-seine fishery along the U.S. east coast, are landed at plants from northern Florida to central Maine. The National Marine Fisheries Service has sampledthese landings since 1955 for length, weight, and age.
