Sieving functional morphology of the gill raker feeding apparatus of atlantic menhaden
Journal of Experimental Zoology Part A: Comparative Experimental Biology, 2006Menhaden occupy an important position in estuarine food webs, thus the rate processes associated with their feeding are critical to the ecosystem management of fishery and ecological resources. Atlantic menhaden feed on a wide range of plankton, the size and food quality of which change ontogenetically.

Phylogeography of the Southwestern Atlantic menhaden genus Brevoortia (Clupeidae, Alosinae)
Marine Biology, 2008Among pelagic fish, the Southwestern Atlantic menhaden genus Brevoortia (Clupeidae, Alosinae) constitutes an important species model to investigate the patterns of genetic differentiation. It is abundant in the Rio de la Plata estuary and in the Atlantic coastal lagoons system from Uruguay and Southern Brazil.

Time Series Analysis and Forecasting of Atlantic Menhaden Catch
Chesapeake Science, 1976The autocorrelation structure of menhaden catch data are examined, and a second order autoregressive model is applied for prediction of menhaden catch. The model is useful for year ahead predictions of catch, and the model enables calculation of confidence intervals or error bounds.

Growth and First Annulus Formation of Tagged and Untagged Atlantic Menhaden
Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, 1974Abstract Tagged Atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, along with nontagged controls were held captive in a natural cove at Beaufort, North Carolina from December 1970 to January 1972. Rate of growth, annulus formation and increase in scale diameter was the same for control menhaden and those tagged one, two or three times.

Alteration of heat resistance of atlantic menhaden, Brevoortia tyrannus, by photoperiod
Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology Part A: Physiology, 1979Abstract 1. 1. Photoperiod, independent of acclimation temperature, modified the upper thermal resistance of the temperate marine fish, Breroortia tyrannus (Latrobe). 2. 2. Juvenile B. tyrannus , acclimated to identical temperatures for 3 months to 8, 16 or 24 hr of light daily, were subjected to thermal shock. 3. 3.

Production and energetics of Atlantic menhaden in Chesapeake Bay
1993Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effects of temperature and prey type on maximum consumption, absorption efficiency and gastric evacuation rates of age 0 Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus. Maximum consumption reached a peak or asymptote between 25 and 29°C.

Purification and Characterization of Alkaline Proteinase from Atlantic Menhaden Muscle
Journal of Food Science, 1999ABSTRACT: Two alkaline proteinases (A and B) were isolated and found to be composed of homogeneous subunits. These proteinases, A and B, were concentrated 62.9‐and 986.5‐fold compared to the crude muscle extract, with molecular weights of 707,000 and 450,000, respectively.

Abstract Life history traits of Atlantic menhaden Brevoortia tyrannus and gulf menhaden B. patronus were compared and interpreted within the context of a bet-hedging model that predicts what traits should evolve in local environments when the survival of the larval stage is less predictable than that of the adult stage.

Predation of Bluefish on Young Atlantic Menhaden in Indian River, Delaware
Chesapeake Science, 1962Stomach contents of 262 bluefish,Pomatomus saltatrix, were examined to determine whether this species is predatory on young Atlantic menhaden,Brevoortia tyrannus. Food occurred in 209 stomachs, of which 90 per cent contained fish and 14 per cent contained invertebrates.
