Nonlinear Release of Subinertial Diurnal Internal Tides Forms Spiral Internal Solitary Waves
Abstract Earth's rotation imposes a dynamical barrier on the free propagation of internal tides at high latitudes, raising questions about the fate of tidal energy poleward of the critical latitude. Satellite observations reveal spiral internal solitary waves (ISWs) along the continental slope of the South Orkney Plateau.

Climate models project reduced temperature variability in Northern high latitudes due to global warming, but impacts on mid-latitude variability remain uncertain. Here, using multi-model simulations from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project, we find

South Atlantic meridional transports from NEMO-based simulations and reanalyses [PDF]
The meridional heat transport (MHT) of the South Atlantic plays a key role in the global heat budget: it is the only equatorward basin-scale ocean heat transport and it sets the northward direction of the global cross-equatorial transport.

Abstract The Younger Dryas (YD, 12,900–11,700 years before present) event offers a key opportunity to investigate climate system responses to abrupt perturbations, yet regional hydroclimate responses in northeastern China remain debated. Here we reconstruct the spatial fingerprint of YD hydroclimate variability using a comprehensive fossil pollen data ...

Generalized stability landscape of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation
Abstract. The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) plays a crucial role in shaping climate conditions over the North Atlantic region and beyond and its future stability is a matter of concern. While the stability of the AMOC to surface freshwater forcing (FWF) has been investigated in numerous model simulations, its equilibrium response ...

The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and the Cabbeling Effect [PDF]
AbstractNorth Atlantic meridional density gradients have been identified as a main driver of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). Due to the cabbeling effect, these density gradients are increasingly dominated by temperature gradients in a warming ocean, and a direct link exists between North Atlantic mean temperature and AMOC ...

ABSTRACT The Laurentide Ice Sheet covered vast areas of North America during the Wisconsinan, including the Labrador Shelf, off the coast of eastern Canada. The shelf is characterized by glacial cross‐shelf troughs, which have been considered as predominantly eroded by the last ice advance.

Suppression of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation Variability at Increased CO2
AbstractMultidecadal variability in the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) is shown to differ significantly between the 4 × CO2 and preindustrial control simulations of the GFDL Earth System Model, version 2M (ESM2M) general circulation model (GCM).

Impact of Model Resolution on Antarctic Bottom Water Representation in Coupled Climate Models
Abstract Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) formation plays a crucial role in the climate system by driving the lower branch of the global overturning circulation, redistributing heat and salt, storing anthropogenic carbon dioxide, and delivering oxygen to the deep ocean.

Strength and geometry of the glacial Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation [PDF]
International audienceThe strength and geometry of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation is tightly coupled to climate on glacial-interglacial and millennial timescales(1), but has proved difficult to reconstruct, particularly for the Last ...
