Enhanced Decadal Variance in Nordic Seas With AMOC Weakening in CESM

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract The subpolar North Atlantic (SPNA) exhibits rapid, decadal‐scale cooling events in several climate model projections, but the mechanisms behind this variability, particularly the role of a weakening Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), remain uncertain.

Climate Change Attribution Using Empirical Decomposition of Climatic Data

open access: yes, 2011
The climate change attribution problem is addressed using empirical decomposition. Cycles in solar motion and activity of 60 and 20 years were used to develop an empirical model of Earth temperature variations.

Multidecadal climate variability over northern France during the past 500 years and its relation to large-scale atmospheric circulation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
(IF 3.76; Q1)International audienceWe examine secular changes and multidecadal climate variability on a seasonal scale in northern France over the last 500 years and examine the extent to which they are driven by large‐scale atmospheric variability ...

Mechanisms for Decadal Variability of Ocean Heat Uptake Inferred From Adjoint Sensitivities

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract The occurrence of a period of slowdown in surface air temperature increase from 1998 to 2013 despite continued greenhouse gas emissions (the warming hiatus) has suggested that ocean heat uptake (OHU) is susceptible to decadal variability. Here, we identify mechanisms that lead to decadal changes in OHU to revisit the origin of the warming ...

Nearly Synchronous Multidecadal Oscillations of Surface Air Temperature in Punta Arenas and the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation Index

open access: yesJournal of Climate, 2018
AbstractThe Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) signature in southern South America (SA) is examined using the surface air temperature (T-air) of Punta Arenas, Chile (53.0°S, 70.85°W), during the 1888–2016 period. The T-air shows multidecadal oscillations with a significant positive correlation of 0.77 to the AMO index.

Pacific and Atlantic Multidecadal Variability in the Kiel Climate Model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Pacific Decadal Variability (PDV) and Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV), the two leading decadal modes of observed Northern Hemisphere sea surface temperature (SST) variability, are investigated in a multi-millennial control integration of the ...

Decadal Changes in Wintertime Frequency of Stratospheric Northern Annular Mode Events With Downward Propagation

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 8, 28 April 2026.
Abstract The surface climate impact of stratospheric polar vortex anomalies depends on their downward propagation (DP) into the troposphere. We find pronounced decadal variability in the winter frequency of stratospheric Northern Annular Mode (SNAM) events that exhibit DP (1951–2024).

Оn the Physical Cause of North-Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation

open access: yes, 2023
It is shown, that the North Atlantic oscillation corresponds to the difference between the values of the near-surface air temperature calculated on the basis of the regression model with insolation contrast as a predictor and the actual long-term changes in the near-surface air temperature.

Historical Trends and Variability in Heat Waves in the United Kingdom

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2017
Increases in numbers and lengths of heat waves have previously been identified in global temperature records, including locations within Europe. However, studies of changes in UK heat wave characteristics are limited.

Planetary harmonics in the historical Hungarian aurora record (1523-1960)

open access: yes, 2013
The historical Hungarian auroral record extends from 1523 to 1960 and is longer than the sunspot record. Harmonic analysis reveals four major multidecadal secular cycles forming an approximate harmonic set at periods of 42.85, 57.13, 85.7 and 171.4 years.
