On the physics of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation

open access: yesOcean Dynamics, 2006
The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) is a pronounced signal of climate variability in the North Atlantic sea-surface temperature field. In this paper, we propose an explanation of the physical processes responsible for the timescale and the spatial pattern of the AMO. Our approach involves the analysis of solutions of a hierarchy of models.

The signature of low‐frequency oceanic forcing in the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation [PDF]

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2016
AbstractThe Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) significantly influences the climate of the surrounding continents and has previously been attributed to variations in the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. Recently, however, similar multidecadal variability was reported in climate models without ocean circulation variability.

Multidecadal variability of summer temperature over Romania and its relation with Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation

open access: yesTheoretical and Applied Climatology, 2012
We investigate the multidecadal variability of summer temperature over Romania as measured at 14 meteorological stations with long term observational records.

Ecosystem effects of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation

Journal of Marine Systems, 2014
Abstract Multidecadal variability in the Atlantic Ocean and its importance to the Earth's climate system has been the subject of study in the physical oceanography field for decades. Only recently, however, has the importance of this variability, termed the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation or AMO, been recognized by ecologists as an important factor
