The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation without a role for ocean circulation

Science, 2015
Ocean circulation changes not needed What causes the pattern of sea surface temperature change that is seen in the North Atlantic Ocean? This naturally occurring quasi-cyclical variation, known as the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), affects weather and climate.

On the physics of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation

Ocean Dynamics, 2006
The Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) is a pronounced signal of climate variability in the North Atlantic sea-surface temperature field. In this paper, we propose an explanation of the physical processes responsible for the timescale and the spatial pattern of the AMO. Our approach involves the analysis of solutions of a hierarchy of models.

Ecosystem effects of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation

Journal of Marine Systems, 2014
Abstract Multidecadal variability in the Atlantic Ocean and its importance to the Earth's climate system has been the subject of study in the physical oceanography field for decades. Only recently, however, has the importance of this variability, termed the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation or AMO, been recognized by ecologists as an important factor

Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and Northern Hemisphere’s climate variability

Climate Dynamics, 2011
Proxy and instrumental records reflect a quasi-cyclic 50–80-year climate signal across the Northern Hemisphere, with particular presence in the North Atlantic. Modeling studies rationalize this variability in terms of intrinsic dynamics of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation influencing distribution of sea-surface-temperature anomalies in ...
