Atlanto-Occipital and Atlanto-Axial Joint Injections

2018
The atlanto-occipital and atlanto-axial joints are susceptible to arthritis and can be injured during acceleration/deceleration (“whiplash”) injuries. Patients often report neck pain and “stiffness” and demonstrate decreased cervical range of motion in all three planes for flexion, extension, and lateral rotation.

Atlanto-Axial Joint Injection: Computed Tomography and Fluoroscopy

open access: yes, 2016
Atlanto-axial (AA) joint injections can be helpful in the diagnosis and management of occipital headaches stemming from the AA joint. Because of the complicated anatomic landscape, imaging guidance is vital in addition to a sound understanding of the anatomy. Several different image modalities are available for use in AA joint blocks.

Lateral atlanto-axial joint access using the C2 pedicle

Pain Medicine
Abstract Background Neck pain and headaches can arise from the lateral atlanto-axial (LAA) joint. This pain can be diagnosed with intra-articular injections of local anesthetic. A widely used technique for access to the lateral atlanto-axial joint uses a posterior approach, but this approach can be ...

Subluxation of the atlanto-axial joint

British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1985
A case of post operative atlanto-axial dislocation is presented which was diagnosed on CT scan although the clinical signs and symptoms should have suggested the diagnosis. It is recommended that all patients who present with torticollis in the early post operative period should be considered to have C1-C2 dislocation and an orthopaedic opinion should ...

Osteoarthritis of the atlanto-axial joints

Der Orthopäde, 1996
Eight patients with post-traumatic chronic cervical syndrome and degenerative changes of the upper cervical spine, were treated with suboccipital fusion. After a mean follow up of 60 months (58-64), the patients were examined. Three patients had died during the follow-up period. A solid fusion was achieved in all cases.

Atlanto-axial rotatory fixation. (Fixed rotatory subluxation of the atlanto-axial joint)

The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 1977
In seventeen cases of irreducible atlanto-axial rotatory subluxation (here called fixation), the striking features were the delay in diagnosis and the persistent clinical and roentgenographic deformities. All patients had torticollis and restricted, often painful neck motion, and seven young patients with long-standing deformity had flattening on one ...

The Atlanto-Axial Joint

The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, 1964
A study of atlanto-axial motions using clinical material, a fresh anatomical specimen, and cineroentgenography is presented. The findings in previous studies have been confirmed. Special emphasis was directed to lateral motion of the atlas on the axis since this motion has received little clinical attention and is not well appreciated.

Prevalence of degenerative changes of the atlanto-axial joints

The Spine Journal, 2015
Degeneration of the atlantodens and atlanto-axial joints is associated with cervical spine pain and may also be associated with an increased risk of dens fracture. However, there is paucity of literature describing the prevalence of specific degenerative changes in the atlantodens and atlanto-axial facet joints. To document age-related degenerative ...

Artificial atlanto-axial joints: On the “move”

Neurology India, 2016
The current management of atlantoaxial dislocation emphasizes on C1-2 reduction and fusion. The fusion of C1-2, however, hampers the neck movements significantly. The author has designed and developed artificial C1-2 joints that can mimic the natural joints to some extent. The concept and nuances of the design has been described.

Involvement of atlanto-axial joint in rheumatoid arthritis: Rare or frequent?

Clinical Rheumatology, 1994
The authors studied the incidence of atlanto-axial joint involvement by conventional radiography and CT in 183 patients with classical or definite rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In determining lesions the significance of factors such as age, sex, duration and severity of the disease was evaluated. Atlanto-axial subluxations turned out to be quite frequent (
