SPONTANEOUS ATLANTOAXIAL DISLOCATIONS

American Journal of Diseases of Children, 1942
In 1935 we 1 called attention to spontaneous atlantoaxial dislocations occurring in childhood. At that time we advanced some original concepts concerning the pathogenesis and mechanism of this condition and concerning the absence of symptoms referable to the spinal cord. We felt that these dislocations were all rotary and unilateral.

Symptomatic atlantoaxial dislocation in Down's syndrome

Annals of Neurology, 1987
AbstractFour patients with Down's syndrome suffered compression of the spinal cord secondary to atlantoaxial dislocation. All four developed inability to walk and quadriparesis, with signs of cervical myelopathy. It is important to recognize this potentially fatal complication of the syndrome.

Classification of the facets of lateral atlantoaxial joints in patients with congenital atlantoaxial dislocation

European Spine Journal, 2020
To investigate the morphological characteristics and para-positions of the facets of lateral atlantoaxial joints (FLAJs) in patients with congenital atlantoaxial dislocation (CAAD) and to propose a classification system for the FLAJs.A total of 93 cases of CAAD were included in this retrospective study.

[Dislocation of the atlantoaxial joint].

Der Unfallchirurg, 2015
Injuries of the cervical spine in adolescents only occur in 0.2 % of cases. Due to the mismatch of size of the head in comparison to the relatively weakly developed neck muscles at this age, the cranial section is more vulnerable to injuries of any kind compared to the lower sections of the cervical spine.

Atlantoaxial dislocation associated with neurofibromatosis

Journal of Neurosurgery, 1983
✓ Atlantoaxial dislocation was found in three patients with neurofibromatosis. Roentgenographic findings included marked reduction of sagittal diameter at the C-1 vertebral level, and cervical spine abnormalities associated with mesodermal dysplasia, such as posterior scalloping of the cervical spinal bodies with dural ectasia and vertebral body ...

Atlantoaxial Dislocation in Down's Syndrome

JAMA, 1968
An increased atlantoodontoid interval is frequently observed in asymptomatic patients with Down's syndrome (mongolism) and severe neurologic complications can occur. Symptomatic atlantoaxial dislocations developed in two such patients. Conditions in both patients were relieved by surgical stabilization of the first and second cervical vertebrae.
