Development of Ternary Magnesium Alloys for Laser Powder Bed Fusion: Optimizing Oxide Layer Thickness

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing of magnesium alloys by laser is difficult because the melting point of the oxide layer is much higher than the evaporation temperature of the metal underneath. Making the oxide layer thinner can solve this problem. Alloying magnesium with strontium makes the oxide layer thinner, especially at 0.5 wt%.

Development of a cavity-enhanced aerosol albedometer [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Measurement Techniques, 2014
We report on the development of a cavity-enhanced aerosol single-scattering albedometer based on incoherent broadband cavity-enhanced absorption spectroscopy (IBBCEAS) combined with an integrating sphere (IS) for simultaneous in situ measurements of ...

Determining the Necessity of Post‐Processing Heat Treatment for the 316L Stainless Steel Manufactured by Laser Powder Bed Fusion through Evaluation of Mechanical and Corrosion Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article examines the effect of postprocessing heat treatment on 316L stainless steel (SS316L) produced via laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). Heat treatment slightly affects property anisotropy, reduces strength, and enhances elongation. However, it increases corrosion susceptibility due to nanoscale precipitations, though overall corrosion ...

Mesoscale modeling study of the interactions between aerosols and PBL meteorology during a haze episode in Jing–Jin–Ji (China) and its nearby surrounding region – Part 1: Aerosol distributions and meteorological features [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2015
The urbanized region ofJing(Beijing)-Jin(Tianjin)-Ji (alias of Hebei province) and its nearby surrounding region (3JNS) is becoming China's most polluted area by haze, exceeding even the Yangtze and Pearl river deltas.

Clouds in Super-Earth Atmospheres: Chemical Equilibrium Calculations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Recent studies have unequivocally proven the existence of clouds in super-Earth atmospheres (Kreidberg et al. 2014). Here we provide a theoretical context for the formation of super-Earth clouds by determining which condensates are likely to form under the assumption of chemical equilibrium. We study super-Earth atmospheres of diverse bulk composition,

Maillard Type Reaction for Electroless Copper Plating onto Ceramic Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents the manufacturing of copper‐plated ceramic nanoparticles in an environmentally friendly way. Supported by organic functionalizations with pectin an electroless plating step can be performed. Sustainable reagents like xylose, and several amino acids are used for the reduction process.

PREDICTIONS OF THE ATMOSPHERIC COMPOSITION OF GJ 1132b [PDF]

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2016
ABSTRACT GJ 1132b is a nearby Earth-sized exoplanet transiting an M dwarf, and is among the most highly characterizable small exoplanets currently known. In this paper, we study the interaction of a magma ocean with a water-rich atmosphere on GJ 1132b and determine that it must have begun with more than 5 wt% initial water in order to ...

Investigation of the Optical Properties of Aerosols over the Coastal Region at Dalian, Northeast China

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2016
Measurements of the aerosol optical depth (AOD) and the Ångström exponent were retrieved from level 1.5 data obtained by the CE318 sun photometer at Dalian monitoring station from April 2007 to April 2012 to characterize the aerosol spatial and temporal ...

Diurnal aerosol variations do affect daily averaged radiative forcing under heavy aerosol loading observed in Hefei, China [PDF]

open access: yesAtmospheric Measurement Techniques, 2015
A strong diurnal variation of aerosol has been observed in many heavily polluted regions in China. This variation could affect the direct aerosol radiative forcing (DARF) evaluation if the daily averaged value is used as normal rather than the time ...

The atmospheric circulation of the super Earth GJ 1214b: Dependence on composition and metallicity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
We present three-dimensional atmospheric circulation models of GJ 1214b, a 2.7 Earth-radius, 6.5 Earth-mass super Earth detected by the MEarth survey. Here we explore the planet's circulation as a function of atmospheric metallicity and atmospheric composition, modeling atmospheres with a low mean-molecular weight (i.e., H2-dominated) and a high mean ...
