Stellar mass loss and atmospheric instability
International Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1988AbstractA review is given of rate of mass-loss values in the upper part of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. Near the luminosity limit of stellar existance = −10−4 M⊙ yr−1. Episodical mass loss in bright variable super- and hypergiants does not significantly increase this value. For Wolf-Rayet stars the rate of mass loss is larger by a factor 140 than

Convective instability in a compressible atmosphere
Solar Physics, 1973The degree of convective instability as expressed by the growth rate ω of linear modes, is calculated for a plane parallel polytropic atmosphere in the presence of radiative damping, without using Boussinesq approximation. A comparison with the results based on the Boussinesq approximation reveals that the use of the Boussinesq approximation leads to ...

Taylor Instability of an Inverted Atmosphere
The Physics of Fluids, 1960The stability of an idealized inverted atmosphere is investigated. It is shown that an initial perturbation grows in a manner similar to that found by Taylor for the instability of accelerated fluid surfaces.

Instability of Frontal Motions in the Atmosphere
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1972Abstract Stability properties of a two-layer model of homogeneous and incompressible fluid subject to gravity and rotation are investigated by the small-perturbation method. The upper and lower fluids correspond, respectively, to warm and cold air. The interface between the warm and cold layers intersects the ground and forms the surface front.

Instabilities of atmospheric laser propagation
SPIE Proceedings, 1990The 'thermal blooming' nonlinearity associated with lasers' atmospheric propagation causes several other propagation instabilities which limit the maximum power transmissible by the atmosphere; these are stimulated thermal Rayleigh scattering, the closed-loop instability, the phase-compensation instability, and, in the case of a repetitively-pulsed ...

Baroclinic Instability in the Venus Atmosphere
Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 1984A three-dimensional, spherical, primitive equation eigenvalue model is used to investigate the baroclinic stability properties of the wind and temperature fields in the Venus atmosphere as measured by Pioneer Venus. It is found that baroclinic instability occurs in the region of the middle cloud deck. The most unstable modes have growth times less than

Magnetic Kelvin–Helmholtz instability in the solar atmosphere
New Astronomy, 2013Abstract Main aim of this paper is to twofold: firstly, to investigate the formation mechanism and secondly to search the effects of fundamental parameters like magnetic field, shear velocity and wave number on the growth rate of the magnetic Kelvin–Helmholtz instability occured in the solar atmosphere.

Cathode instability in argon atmospheres
Electrical Engineering, 1956EXTENSIVE experimental and analytical studies have provided a basic understanding of the manifestation of arc cathode instability relative to fluctuations of arc voltage as influenced by electrical, chemical, and geometrical parameters. These studies have contributed significantly to the development of controlled cathode stabilization systems of the ...

Combustion Instabilities and Control of a Multiswirl Atmospheric Combustor
Journal of Engineering for Gas Turbines and Power, 2004Thermoacoustic instability and lean blowout (LBO) are investigated experimentally in an atmospheric swirl-stabilized combustor fueled with gaseous propane. Factors affecting combustion instability are identified. Sinusoidal or steady air forcing of either the swirling air shear layer or the fuel line, with less than 1.0% of combustion air, can reduce ...
