Convective instability in the martian middle atmosphere

Icarus, 2010
Dry convective instabilities in Mars’s middle atmosphere are detected and mapped using temperature retrievals from Mars Climate Sounder observations spanning 1.5 martian years. The instabilities are moderately frequent in the winter extratropics. The frequency and strength of middle atmospheric convective instability in the northern extratropics is ...

Thermosolutal convective instability in a stellar atmosphere

Acta Physica Hungarica, 1984
Thermal-convective instability in a stellar atmosphere is considered to include the effect of a stable gradient. A criterion for monotonic instability is derived. The thermosolutal convective instability problem in the presence of magnetic field and rotation is also studied.

Waves and Instabilities in the Atmosphere

1985
The theory of wave motions in a continuous media is one of the best-developed theories in classical fluid dynamics and special mathematical methods have been created for the purpose. A short review is given below Let δ(x, t)be a function of the distance x and time t and δ=ψ(x) at t = 0. Then, if at x = θ ± c t the equality $$\delta = \psi (\theta )

Laboratory and Atmospheric Vortex Instabilities

The Journal of Weather Modification, 1979
Mesoscale atmospheric vortices such as dust devils, tornadoes and fire whirls may be modelled in the laboratory if the similarity requirement of equal advance angles of the upward swirling flow is preserved. Theoretical analysis shows that linear vortices are stable even for large pertubations near their base.

On Instability of a Composite Rotating Stellar Atmosphere

EARTH SCIENCES AND HUMAN CONSTRUCTIONS, 2022
The aim of the present work was to study the thermal-convective instability of a composite rotating stellar atmosphere in the presence of a variable horizontal magnetic field to include, separately, the effects of medium permeability and solute gradient.

The condition of instability: Instabilities of upper and lower atmospheric disturbances

Archives for Meteorology, Geophysics, and Bioclimatology Series A, 1983
The present paper gives a condition of instability of waves of infinite lateral extent. Also, it is shown that the upper atmospheric short wave of zonal wave number 8 and lower atmospheric cyclone scale wave become unstable and break down in the absence of diabatic heating.

Atmospheric gravity wave instability?

Journal of Geophysical Research, 1967
Recently Hines [1965] in a review of atmospheric gravity wave theory invited the attention of wave theorists from other fields. This note is a direct result and is a by-product of other work in plasma waves. The intent of this note is only to point out an interesting feature of an equation given by Hines and treated somewhat on the same footing as a ...

Radiative instability of a cloudy planetary atmosphere

Icarus, 1973
A cloudy planetary atmosphere at rest is shown to be unstable to disturbances of large horizontal scale. The energy source for the instability is the change in radiative heat flux associated with vertical displacement near the emitting level. A simple model is described in which Q∞ δz, where Q is the net heating rate in the cloud and δz is vertical ...

Nonlinear Gravitational Waves and Atmospheric Instability

Izvestiya, Atmospheric and Oceanic Physics, 2018
This is an outline of the main results of the study of dust devils (a type of atmospheric vortices) with a focus on the mechanism of vortex generation in an unstable stratified atmosphere. In the approximation of ideal hydrodynamics, a new nonlinear model of the generation of convective motions and dust devils in an unstable stratified atmosphere has ...

An Analysis of the Conditional Instability of the Tropical Atmosphere

Monthly Weather Review, 1993
Abstract The ice phase is included in thermodynamic calculations of convective available potential energy (CAPE) for a large number of soundings in the tropical atmosphere, at both land and ocean stations. It is found that the positive-buoyancy contribution to CAPE resulting from the latent heat of fusion more than offsets the negative-buoyancy ...
