Production of biocompatible coatings by atmospheric plasma spraying

Materials Science and Engineering: A, 1991
Abstract This work deals with the formation of biocompatible coatings on implants such as artificial hips or teeth. Various techniques improving the bond between the natural bone and the plant to extend lifetime and to improve performance have been developed in the past.

Intersplat Oxidation of Atmospheric Plasma Sprayed MCrAlY Coatings

Volume 6: Ceramics; Controls, Diagnostics and Instrumentation; Education; Manufacturing Materials and Metallurgy, 2014
MCrAlY coatings and thermal barrier coatings (TBC) are commonly used in gas turbines to prolong the life of structural parts. The atmospheric plasma spray (APS) process yields coatings with a typical splat-on-splat structure which oxidizes at intersplat boundaries during high-temperature exposure.

Characterization of YSZ SOFC Electrolyte Deposited by Atmospheric Plasma Spraying and Low Pressure Plasma Spraying

International Thermal Spray Conference, 2006
Abstract Yttria doped zirconia has been widely employed as electrolyte materials for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Plasma spraying is a cost-effective process to deposit YSZ electrolyte. In this study, the 8 mol % Y2O3 stabilized ZrO2 (YSZ) layer was deposited by low pressure plasma spraying (LPPS) and atmospheric plasma spraying (APS)

Influence of Noise Factors on Atmospheric Plasma Spraying

International Thermal Spray Conference, 2002
Abstract Studies on atmospheric plasma spraying have generally focused on the influence primary parameters such as gas flows and plasma current. However, the APS process is also influenced by a large number of disturbance variables including electrode wear, cooling system irregularities, and disruptions in powder injection.

Comparison of Silicon Coatings Deposited by Vacuum Plasma Spraying (VPS) & Atmospheric Plasma Spraying (APS)

Materials Science Forum, 2006
In this work, silicon coatings were deposited using VPS and APS technologies. Their structure and composition were characterized using XPS, SEM, and XRD. The porosity and surface-roughness of coatings were evaluated. The results showed that the VPS silicon coating possessed lower porosity compared with the APS silicon coating.

Microstructure and Thermal Property of Atmospheric Plasma Sprayed Yb2Si2O7 Coating

International Thermal Spray Conference, 2016
Abstract In this work, Yb2Si2O7 powder was synthesized from Yb2O3 and SiO2 powders and applied to aluminum substrates by atmospheric plasma spraying. Phase composition and microstructure were examined and density, porosity, and hardness were assessed.

Characterization of Lithium Phosphate Deposit by Atmospheric Plasma Spraying

International Thermal Spray Conference, 2021
Abstract Plasma spraying was used to deposit Li3PO4 coatings from sintered dense powders in three size ranges to study the effects of particle size and spraying distance. Coating microstructure, crystal structure, and composition were characterized using SEM, XRD, ICP-MS, and FTIR.

Nanostructured YSZ Thermal Barrier Coatings Obtained by Atmospheric Plasma Spray

Advanced Science Letters, 2017
The enhancement of turbojets performances in terms of efficiency, thrust and reliability strongly depends on the design of the turbine hi-pressure stages, and in particular by the maximum inlet gas temperature. A lot of studies are focused on the development of materials with improved thermo-mechanical properties in order to increase the working ...

Plasma transferred arc surface modification of atmospheric plasma sprayed ceramic coatings

Journal of Mechanical Science and Technology, 2016
In this study, a 90MnCrV8 steel surface was coated with aluminum oxide and chromium oxide powders through the Atmospheric plasma spray (APS) and Plasma transferred arc (PTA) methods. The effects of PTA surface melting on the microstructure, hardness, and wear behavior were investigated.

Alumina-Titania Spot Spraying Bead Formation and Characteristics in Atmospheric Plasma Spraying

Materials Science Forum, 2007
Fine and coarse alumina-titania composite particles were overlaid by allowing the particles to be deposited for a short time without moving a plasmatron [spot spraying bead]. Both the deposition efficiency and maximum deposition rate were measured at the different plasma gas composition.
