Graft copolymers prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) from cellulose

Abstract A cellulose-based macro-initiator, cellulose 2-bromoisobutyrylate, for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) was successfully synthesized by direct homogeneous acylation of cellulose in a room temperature ionic liquid, 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, without using any catalysts and protecting group chemistry.

This study demonstrates the surface modification of carbon fiber by grafting polyglycidyl methacrylate (PGMA) using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). Firstly, the surface of carbon fiber was modified by using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane and 2-bromoisobutyryl bromide to immobilize ATRP initiators on the surface.

AbstractParallel atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of styrene and t‐butyl acrylate (t‐BA) was investigated. A series of ATRP polymerizations were carried out in parallel with varying targeted molecular weight ($\overline M _{\rm n}$) and showed excellent reproducibility of $\overline M _{\rm n}$, polydispersity, and conversion.
