Fossil freshwater fishes from the Pliocene of northern Colombia and the palaeogeography of northern South America

open access: yesPapers in Palaeontology, Volume 12, Issue 4, July/August 2026.
Abstract Freshwater fishes from the northwestern Colombian Andes are reported from the Pliocene Sincelejo and Ware formations. A total of 10 taxa have been identified, involving two orders, five families and nine genera. Characters from dental morphology, fin spines and cranial bones are provided as taxonomic tools for the study of fossil fishes.

Study of Atrato river plume in a tropical estuary: Effects of the wind and tidal regime on the Gulf of Uraba, Colombia [Estudio de la pluma del río Atrato en un estuario en el trópico: Efectos del viento y del régimen de mareas en el Golfo de Urabá, Colombia] [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This study focuses on the relative importance of the forcing agents of Atrato River plume as it propagates in a tropical estuary located in the Gulf of Uraba in the Colombian Caribbean Sea.

¿Un país de irresponsables?: Filming Responsibility for Environmental Harm in the Judicialised Matanza‐Riachuelo River Basin

open access: yesBulletin of Latin American Research, Volume 45, Issue 3, July 2026.
ABSTRACT This article explores how documentary film constructs responsibility for environmental harm in response to the Argentine Supreme Court's 2008 ruling on the polluted Matanza‐Riachuelo river basin. Through an interdisciplinary dialogue between socio‐legal, film and cultural studies, the analysis explores how three documentaries envisage ...

Aquatic insects associated with macrophytes in wetlands of the middle basin of Atrato River, Chocó - Colombia

open access: yesRevista U.D.C.A Actualidad & Divulgación Científica
Aquatic macrophytes play an important role in lentic systems, since they constitute the particular habitat of several groups of aquatic insects and play a fundamental role in structuring their communities. The objective of this study was to contribute to the knowledge of the aquatic entomofauna associated with macrophytes in wetlands of the middle ...

Ecological restoration in rights‐of‐nature laws and restoration as a substantive right of nature: challenges and opportunities

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, Volume 34, Issue S1, May 2026.
Introduction A growing number of countries have adopted legislation that recognizes nature as a subject of rights. The purpose of many rights‐of‐nature laws is linked to restoring biodiversity and ecosystems. Consequently, an ecosystem's right to restoration has emerged as a substantive right of nature.

From maps to mandates: Multitemporal vegetation cover analysis as a tool to evaluate environmental judicial decisions

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 4, Page 886-903, April 2026.
Abstract This study examines the use of multitemporal vegetation cover analysis as a tool to assess the ecological effectiveness of judicial decisions that recognize the rights of nature, using Colombia's 2016 T‐622 decision on the Atrato River as a case study.

Evolving Strain Partitioning Driven by Multiple Plate Interaction—Paleotectonic Reconstruction of Northwestern South America During the Cenozoic

open access: yesTectonics, Volume 44, Issue 12, December 2025.
Abstract In Northwestern South America (NWSA) geodetic observations point to a consistent northeastward displacement of blocks, while the geological record shows a predominant shortening in NW‐SE direction. Such clear evidence of strain partitioning has been extensively studied in the context of two convergent plates, but not in complex tectonic area ...

Evolutionary history of Middle American Rhamdia (Siluriformes: Heptapteridae) inferred from comparative mitogenomic data: Insights on historical biogeography and cave colonization in the group

open access: yesJournal of Systematics and Evolution, Volume 63, Issue 6, Page 1501-1518, November 2025.
Investigating the systematics and biogeography of Neotropical catfishes of the genus Rhamdia refined phylogenetic hypotheses, including deep paraphyly of Rhamdia laticauda, supported northward dispersal catalyzed by emergence of the Panamanian Isthmus and imply that cave colonization is widespread, convergent, and recent, with established cave‐dwelling
