A family is described in which the mother and three of seven children had atrial myxoma. The mother had biatrial myxoma; surgical treatment resulted in massive intraoperative embolization and death. Surgery was sucessful in two sons with left atrial myxoma and systemic arterial embolization.

Tumors that were identical in morphology to a previously excised atrial myxoma were found in the choroid plexus and the scapula of a 46-year-old woman 8 and 10.5 years, respectively, after cardiac surgery. Ultrastructurally the scapular lesion resembled previously reported atrial myxomas.

Cardiac myxomas are the most common primary cardiac tumors and typically arise from the left atrium. Although histologically benign, large and highly mobile myxomas may cause severe hemodynamic compromise and mimic valvular heart disease or heart failure syndromes.

This report describes atrial myxomas present in a mother and her daughter. The mother had biatrial tumors while that of the daughter was in the left atrium. We examined 48 relatives all of whom had normal hearts.

The diagnosis was made with echocardiography, thus demonstrating the value of this rapid, noninvasive screening test. A ruptured mycotic aneurysm in the brain precluded early surgical excision of the tumor.
