Magnetocardiography for the non‐invasive diagnosis of myocardial inflammation in cardiac amyloidosis: A proof‐of‐concept study

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, EarlyView.
Abstract Aims Myocardial inflammation is increasingly recognized for its association with impaired clinical outcomes in cardiac amyloidosis but a trend towards less invasive diagnosis impedes its detection. The aim of this study was to assess magnetocardiography (MCG) as a potential non‐invasive method to diagnose myocardial inflammation in patients ...

The pulmonary artery pulsatility index in patients with severe aortic stenosis undergoing valve replacement

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and aims The pulmonary artery pulsatility index (PAPi), that is, the pulmonary artery pulse pressure (PAPP) divided by the mean right atrial pressure (mRAP), is an increasingly used invasive index of right ventricular function. We sought to assess the prognostic impact of the PAPi in unselected patients with aortic stenosis (AS ...

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of adults with acute heart failure in a South African teaching hospital

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, EarlyView.
In this study of 406 adults admitted with acute heart failure, the overall in‐hospital mortality rate was 3.4%. Independent predictors of in‐hospital mortality included elevated neutrophil‐lymphocyte ratio, C‐reactive protein, and potassium levels, along with moderate or severe aortic regurgitation and lower diastolic blood pressure.

Epicardial, visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue in heart failure with preserved ejection fraction

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, EarlyView.
Gender‐specific differences in the amount and distribution of adipose tissue in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). BMI, body mass index; EAT, epicardial adipose tissue; SAT, subcutaneous adipose tissue; VAT, visceral adipose tissue; WC, waist circumference. *P value <0.05, ***P value < 0.001.

Phenotype characterization of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction in medical device and surgical trials

open access: yesESC Heart Failure, EarlyView.
This systematic review identified 24 clinical trials of medical device and surgical interventions for HFpEF, with 16 demonstrating at least safety and feasibility, but little evidence of long‐term benefit. Phenotype‐based responses suggest that certain interventions may benefit specific HFpEF subgroups, yet most trials suffered from heterogeneous ...
