Study of the peripheral blood and of smears of the sternal bone marrow of 15 patients with atrophic gastritis without pernicious anemia revealed no consistent abnormalities which might aid in identifying the cause of the gastric disease. A mild anemia, predominantly microcytic or macrocytic, was observed in seven patients.

Elevation in fasting serum gastrin levels was found in three patients being evaluated for persistent upper abdominal pain without radiographic evidence of peptic ulcer disease. Fiberoptic endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract in each patient revealed characteristic changes of chronic atrophic gastritis.
