Assessing the severity of atrophic gastritis
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, 2007Atrophic gastritis, mainly the consequence of long-standing Helicobacter pylori infection, is linked to the development of gastric cancer. In the case of atrophic gastritis, severity may be mainly related to the lifetime risk of the single patient to develop gastric cancer, mostly in relation to the degree and extension of mucosal damage.

The American Journal of Digestive Diseases, 1953Study of the peripheral blood and of smears of the sternal bone marrow of 15 patients with atrophic gastritis without pernicious anemia revealed no consistent abnormalities which might aid in identifying the cause of the gastric disease. Southern Medical Journal, 1976Elevation in fasting serum gastrin levels was found in three patients being evaluated for persistent upper abdominal pain without radiographic evidence of peptic ulcer disease. Fiberoptic endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal tract in each patient revealed characteristic changes of chronic atrophic gastritis.
