Atrophic lesions of the tongue among diabetic outpatients: their incidence and regression

Abstract.A review of 121 diabetic outpatients over periods of 3 months to 1 year revealed that, while some cases of glossal central papillary atrophy persist, others regress. The incidence of new cases maintained the prevalence at a relatively constant level.

Abstract.Central papillary atrophy and other anomalies of the tongue were studied among 175 diabetic outpatients attending the Tygerberg Hospital. Atrophic lesions of the tongue were found in 26.9 % of the patients and 61.7 % of these lesions were central papillary atrophy.

Oral Candida, debilitating disease and atrophic lesions of the tongue.

Central papillary atrophy of the tongue (CPA) was significantly more common in diabetics than in non-diabetic control subjects. Candida species were cultured from 46% of diabetics. The only species insolated from diabetics with atrophic glossitis was Candida albicans. Almost one in five of the diabetics gave positive smears for candidal mycelia.
